Tehachapi Wins SSL Opener
With a methodical run game and a big play passing attack, the Warriors overwhelmed Shafter in the first SSL game of the season last Friday night in a 49-7 win.
Tehachapi (5-1; 1-0 SSL) ended the first half with 35-0 lead. Their first offensive series for the Warriors was an eight-play drive that was capped by a Marcus Curiel five-yard touchdown run. Curiel would go on to register 44 yards and two touchdowns in only two quarters of work, while Wyatt Vance would also bow out of the game before halftime finishing with 130 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Other first and second quarter offensive highlights came from quarterback Bobby Howell, who hooked up with Cody Hall on a 55-yard touchdown reception and Cory Lange on 43 yard score. Lange would go on to lead all receivers in the game with 121 yards on three catches.
Standouts in the second half included Barry Jones with 56 yards rushing and a touchdown and Dalton Scaggs a 23-yard touchdown run and a perfect 6-6 on PATs.
Tryon Johnson led all runners in the fourth quarter with 29 yards on the ground, while Ryle Snowder, David Carter and Christian Terle combined for 56 yards rushing.
Special teams highlights include Blake Waters and Ray Hosier with punts of 44 and 43 yards, Brian Castaneda with a PAT and Miles Villarreal with 28 yards on three punt returns.
Mountain Football will be on the road again this Friday night in a league match-up against Arvin.

SHAFTER -- Bobby Howell threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, and Tehachapi rolled to a 49-7 South Sequoia League victory Friday over Shafter.
Cody Hall and Cory Lange caught touchdown passes from Howell for 55 and 43 yards, respectively. Lange finished with three catches for 121 yards.
Wyatt Vance led the ground attack for Tehachapi (5-1, 1-0 SSL) with 130 yards and a touchdown.
Marcus Curiel also had 44 yards rushing and a touchdown in limited action, while Barry Jones had 56 yards rushing and a score in the second half.
For Shafter (2-4, 0-1 SSL), Derrick Barton completed 18-of-29 passes for 208 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Ted Bloemhof in the fourth quarter. Emilio Lopez led Shafter with seven receptions for 92 yards.
