Finish at 4-1 in Non-League Play
BAKERSFIELD - On a cool rainy evening, the visiting Tehachapi Warriors finished their non-league schedule at 4-1 by soundly defeating Stockdale High School, 35-28. The Warriors will have a bye next week, and then begin league play at Shafter on October 5. Stockdale drops to 1-3 for the season.
The Warriors led by a 7-0 count after one quarter, 21-7 by the half, and 28-7 after three quarters. Tehachapi led 35-14 late in the game when Stockdale scored two touchdowns, one at the 1:50 mark and the other with 8 seconds remaining in the game.
Warrior coach Steve Denman was quoted by the Bakersfield Californian as saying, “We were just happy to come down here and play a little better than we did last week as far as execution on defense. We forced some turnovers tonight and kind of got them out of their rhythm.”
Forcing five turnovers, the Warrior defense was led by Garrett Coontz and Alek Taliulu with 9 tackles each. Derek Lange, Josh Schulgen, Jeff Waldren, and Frank Rodrigues each collected an interception. Coontz also had a key fumble recovery to set up a TD for the Warriors late in the 1st half.
Once again the Warriors used their famed Wing-T offense to ground out nearly 300 yards rushing behind the dynamic trio of Kelly Lorenz (130 yds. rushing), Josh Strauss (97 yds. rushing), and Adam Mullen (63 yds. rushing). The Warrior offense also sprinkled in a few key passes with QB Ehren Ochsenrider connecting on three passes (in nine attempts) for 54 yards. JJ Balkar hauled in one of those passes for 40 yds.
Stockdale quarterback K.C. Hobson completed 14 of 33 passes for 112 yards passing, but he also surrended those four costly interceptions to the Warrior secondary. Tyler Hernandez led the Mustangs with 79 yards in 10 carries, scoring 1 TD.
The Warriors continued their dominance over the much larger Bakersfield school, winning for the 7th time in 10 games since the series began in 1992.
