Cora and Carl's Christmas Letter, Vina, California, December, 1947

Dear Christian Friends:

There is renewed and increased thanksgiving in our hearts for each one of our friends practically all of whom we came to know just because the Lord Jesus Christ is the center of our fellowship.

Our minds turn with new interest to Luke 2:10, "And the Angel said unto them, Fear not: for, bheold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people".

We rejoice together because of the mutual joy which is ours in Him, but the Word says: "Which shall be to all people." In our much rejoicing in comfortable and prosperous United States we seem to be too content that close to one billion have never heard that there is such as thing as "Good Tidings". "Perfect love casteth out fear," but His constraining love hasn't gripped our hearts. We are afraid to leave comfortable pastorates, jobs, positions, popularity and puny secuirity to be God's channel for the carrying out of the thing which He stresses over and over as being His heart interest. If governments were to offer a nice fat salary to new missionaries, am confident that thousands of houng and old would get a mysterious call to the foreign field, and yet God's word does not even imply that that's a scriptural reason for staying home.

Over nineteen and one-half years ago the Lord spoke to my heart and I felt He wanted me in China eventually. At the present time the situation seems hopeful [but God turned Carl and Cora Taylor and family to Brazil soon after this, as it turned out!--Ed.]. The Lord willing, we shall soon make application for passports under the New Tribes Mission where we plan to finish our course of training in January and who also have a receiving station in PaoShan, Yunnan Province on the Burma Border. As the Lord leads, the work there will be amongst the tribes people--100 different tribes, most of which are completely unreached by the gospel. Rev. Kuhn, Chairman of the C.I.M. [China Inland Mission, founded by legendary missionary to China, Hudson Taylor] for that area, has mentioned that he will be happy to cooperate with New Tribers for the reaching of these benighted tribes. We shall greatly need your prayers to the end that the State Department shall grant passports and then for the months of final preparations such as deputation work in Camp Wycliffe in Okla. next summer, and the securing of equipment for our family for five to seven years, all according as He dictates.

While attending New Tribes Institute this semester the Lord has opened up a little community church to which we have been ministering with much blessing to our souls. It is affiliated with the Baptists and is located in a small farming community by the name of Vina, located 19 miles north of Chico, one mile west of Highway 99E. We have an extra guest room in our parsonage for any of you friends who should be passing our way.

Brother John Greiner, a teacher at New Tribes Institute, recently conducted evangelistic meetings in our church. He is awaiting passport to Bolivia for himself, his wife, and four small daughters, the "Greiner Girls quartet"--five years of age and under. There was a real movement of the Spirit of God in which parents, young people and children were strongly convicted of sin and melted before the Lord because of unconfessed sin. For the first time some of these parents and young people came face to face with the possibility of going to the mission field.

This Christmas season finds Carleen, now almost six years of age and in the first grade, reviewing the Christmas story to quote again at the program. For many months she had been praying Calvin [Carleen's younger brother] under conviction of sin. So not so many weeks ago we had the joy of leading him to Christ, after he requested us to do so. Little Beth Ann will soon pass the first mile-stone. She is such a joy with all the cute expressions that accompany that age, such as patty-cake, and a big "Hi" every time she comes into a room, and reaching her hands up when asked "how big is Beth Ann?" Cora is busy learning Chinese from fifty Chinese records which we were abloe to secure, practicing on the accordian for the field, and enjoys working with about 30 children in children's work. We both feel better physically than we have for years [Carl contacted rheumatic fever while pastoring a mission church in Homer, Alaska, and the doctor ordered them to move south for Carl Taylor's health and healing], and are rejoicing in Him "who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ." The entire family joins me in wishing each of your homes God's choicest blessings for the coming year.

In His abounding grace, Carl and Cora Taylor

On the back of the letter, this typed message from Cora to her sister Pearl Ginther:

Dear Pearl of Pearls and all the little Jewels:

Merry Christmas to you all this season as you look forward to the celebration of Jesus' Birthday. One thing that has convicted me the past yrs. is the bustle and hurrying that seems to accompany the holidays that bring an unrest to ones heart therefore causing Christ to be put so far in the background and the temporal things taking the lead so many times--it behooves us as Christians to be much in prayer that every thing we do should be to honor Him.

My Pearl, you have been so good to write. We haven't even answered your last letter. That reminds me did you ever write Mrs. Huntsinger? I believe her address is 136 Rancocas Ave., Riverside, N.J. Yes, that is right. She had a white Bunting. She sent me a large box of things for Beth Ann. It was a real answer to prayer. She had no coat and she got a sweet coat set besides 2 lovely snow suits and lots of dresses. I was able to give many of them to a part Jewish family that attend our church.

We are trying to get out these 200 letters starting last night, but my, it always takes about a month.

Just took coffee and cookies out to the two fellows shingling our parsonage roof, one is a Christian from our group and the other is an atheist. The first ime he wouldn't even look at me, now he talks and even asks me questions and looks me in the face when he talks. He is the father of some of our S.S. children and we do so want to win him.

We are giving the play "The Orphanage" for the third yr. this yr. It has been used to win 2 souls already so I do believe it will be used again to His Glory. Pray for me as I have been elected to take the leading part and that includes an altar call which I have never done in a large crowd.

Do write Gloria and Darrell we long to hear from you too. P.S. Package was sent for Roberta yesterday. Love in Him, Cora and rest.

Additional typed note on back:

Had a lovely letter from Papa, Mama, and Be. Russ is due home today, my, what a day of rejoicing. Be writes that Russ wrote, "Le's write a long mimeographed letter (200) to our friends and let them in on a few things. I'm not with holding a thing now." PRAISE THE LORD
