“Everything is going well. In just a few moments Barney Hiller should be fully activated. You haven’t told Steve yet have you?” Rudy wondered.

“No, but he is on his way. I told him to meet me here.” Oscar explained. “I’m real curious to compare him to Marc. I mean Marc’s bionics, are practically brand new. We just changed him in January.” Oscar noted.

“I really didn’t want to tell Barney about Marc. I don’t think he needs to know that you have an eight year old son much less that he is bionic.” Rudy stated.

I don’t think it will hurt Rudy.” Oscar stated. “How much longer till…”

“Give it a few more minutes.” Rudy said calmly.

On his way into Rudy’s lab where Oscar had asked to meet him Steve ran into his old friend Carla Peterson. The two of them chatted for a few moments. Carla informed him that she and Barney had finally married.

Steve informed her he too was married. And they were expecting. “Why are you here anyway?” He wondered.

She explained that Rudy was reactivating Barney for some reason.

“Will you excuse me?” Steve left Carla standing in the parking lot and ran up to Rudy’s office.

“Oscar! Can I see you out in the hall?” Steve said when he entered Rudy’s office. I really don’t want Barney to hear this.”

The three of them stepped out into the hall. “Do you want to tell me just what the devil is going on? You know Barney can’t handle bionic strength!”

“Steve it’s just for a twenty four hour period. It will be very controlled. And Barney agreed to it. We couldn’t do it to you or Marc cause we don’t know what the results would be.”

“Couldn’t do what, I don’t understand?” Steve had calmed down a bit.

“We want to compare Barney’s recently tuned up bionics with yours. We would maybe like an army of deactivated bionic men, ready to go at a moments notice in case a war ever broke out. We want to see if it can be done.” Oscar tried to explain.

“So Oscar wants to compare Barney’s strength to you and Marc…” Rudy started.

“No way, you are not, I repeat NOT involving Marc in this! I don’t trust Barney’s mental state when he is fully activated.”

“First of all Marc is already on his way. Second of all he is my son, not yours I make those decisions!!” Oscar thundered.

Steve became furious. “Fine!” He shrieked “Then you do it with out me!! I’m not playing any part in this if Marc is involved. I don’t want him to think it was my idea when this blows up in your face. And it will!!” He pointed a finger at Oscar.

“Steve. Marc wants to help. I explained everything to him last night.” Oscar tried not only to calm Steve down but he wanted him to change his mind. “Marc will be fine, trust me.”

Oscar continued. “I want to see how Barney’s strength holds up to someone whose bionics are almost brand new.” Oscar finished.

“I’m not all for it myself Steve,” Rudy told him. “I really don’t want Marc involved. But I have no choice.”

“Steve, I really want your help on this one.” Oscar explained.

Steve shook his head. “No way leave me out of it.” He turned to leave.

“Steve!” Oscar called. Then he calmed down “I’m no longer asking I telling you. You have to do this.” Oscar spoke softly.

Steve stopped and turned around. “You mean you are ordering me to do this. Even if I don’t think it the right thing to do?”

“Yes, you can consider it an order!” Oscar told him. “In fact you can consider it a direct order.”

“On one condition. You tell Marc I want no part of it. In other words you tell him the truth.”

“I don’t take orders Col. I give them.” Oscar spoke softly

Steve walked over to where Oscar stood. “Ok I’ll do what you ask, but I am telling Marc that I want no part of it!!” He screamed at Oscar.

“No you won’t. You will do what I say, when I say. Understand? And you won’t say a word to Marc. He has already agreed to help out on this one. Jaime should be here with him soon.”

“I better leave Oscar because right now I am not very happy with you, or what you are doing.”

“You really don’t want Marc involved do you?” Oscar had calmed down.

“Oscar. I told you. I don’t trust Barney’s mental state when he is fully activated. I mean Marc had enough problems adjusting. I am still working with him. I’m afraid Barney might say something to him.”

“What could he possibly say?” Oscar wanted to know.

“Oscar you don’t know Barney as well as I feel I do. And it doesn’t take much to put Marc over the edge.” Steve continued.

“Steve’s right Oscar. Barney never did fully adjust. Marc is making progress. Why should we expose him to something that could set him back to the beginning, or worse?” Rudy interjected. “Besides. I have the results from Marc’s last tests. I can use those.”

They both turned toward Oscar. “Well Oscar?” Steve asked.

All right, all right the two of you win. Rudy maybe you better get in there with Barney so you’re there when he wakes up.”

Rudy stepped back into the lab. Oscar turned to Steve. “Like I said, Marc is on his way, Jaime is bringing him.”

“I’ll head them off I’ll tell him that plans have changed.” Steve stated.

“Ok. Maybe you’re right. I don’t want to do anything to harm Marc.” Oscar was much calmer now.

The elevator opened and Marc stepped off. “Hi Steve.” He called

“Hey partner. How are you?” Steve asked.

“I’m fine. Did dad tell you I was going to help him out…”

“Yea he did. But plans have changed ok. As much as we would like you to help, I feel it’s…

“You mean I don’t have to help?” Marc’s eyes beamed. “I can go back and play with Matt then?” Marc smiled. “I really didn’t want to help today anyway. It’s Saturday. I wanted to play.”

“Well you go right ahead you have a good time. I’ll see you later ok.” Steve gave him a pretend shove toward the elevator.

“I just hope Jaime hasn’t left yet.” Marc got back on the elevator that would take him back downstairs.

Steve walked back into Rudy’s office he called the main gate “Yes this is Col. Austin has my wife left yet?”

“No sir. She’s right here.” The gate guard stated

“Well keep her there. Tell her Marc is going with her after all.”

“Yes sir, she’s on her way back in.” The guard said.

Steve went to the window and watched as Jaime helped Marc into the car. Then he turned to Rudy. “He’s on his way back home.”

“Well that’s good Steve I really didn’t want Marc involved either.” Rudy stated.

“Yea, I know that Rudy. How’s Barney doing?”

“He’s ready.” Rudy informed him.

That’s great!” Oscar said. They started walking toward Barney. “By the way Steve. How did Marc take the news we didn’t need his help? He seemed anxious last night?”

“He was very excited. He said he wanted to play with Matt. That’s where he should anyway Oscar.”

“Yea, I guess you’re right.” Oscar agreed. “He probably will have more fun.”

Barney slowly came around. “Hey Rudy.” He said trying to get up off the gurney Rudy had him on.

Rudy stepped over to him. “Just take it easy Barney.” Rudy tried to hold him down.

“I feel fine Rudy.” Barney related. “Really”

“That may be true Barney, but I would rather you take it easy for just a bit longer.” Rudy continued to hold him. “I’ll give you a few more minutes, then we will get to work.”

“I’m ready right now. Let’s get to it.”

“Well ok” Rudy turned to Steve “Why don’t the two of you get ready and we’ll get started.”

Steve and Barney ran through the tests Rudy had laid out for them. Oscar was pleased to see they kept up with each other quite well.

Midway through the tests Barney announced he had other plans.

“What do you mean ‘other plans’ Barney?” Steve was annoyed. First he was annoyed at the fact that Oscar had reactivated Barney to begin with and now this.

“Does Oscar know about this?” Steve asked.

“Of course he does.” Barney informed him “I would not have agreed to it otherwise.”

“If you’ll excuse me.” Steve stormed over to where Oscar and Rudy stood. They were comparing the results of the tests. Rudy had also brought the results of Marc’s last tests.

“How come Marc seems to run faster than both Barney and Steve?” Oscar wondered.

“Well Marc’s bionics are newer, but I think the biggest reason is due to the fact that Marc is smaller than Steve and Barney.” Rudy explained.

“I don’t know if I quite understand.” Oscar looked at him.”

“Marc doesn’t have as much weight…’

“Oscar!” Steve thundered. “I thought this was to be controlled?” Steve continued. Shouting.

“What’s the matter Steve?” Oscar asked.

“Why are you letting Barney go?” Steve demanded.

“It’s just for a little while Steve. It was the only way we could get Barney to agree to doing this.” Oscar explained.

“Well I’m going to follow him.” Steve told him.

“You don’t think we should let him out of our sight huh?” Oscar said.

“Not for one second.” Steve said as he took off. Steve followed Barney into Maryland. He followed him to an abandoned building. “What are you up to?” Steve wondered. He got out of the car and went inside.

Barney was waiting for him. “I knew you would follow me Steve. He drew a gun. Now just stay with me Steve and nobody gets hurt.” Barney told him…

“Come on Barney” Steve protested. “You don’t really want to do this?”

“Oh yes I do.” Barney screamed. “I knew you would follow me. That’s why I made up that excuse to Oscar and Rudy. You see I have resented the fact that you forced Rudy to tune me down. I know what your problem is, your jealous.” Barney stated.

“Jealous? Barney your crazy.” Steve whispered.

“Crazy, that’s what you want Rudy and Oscar to think.” Barney seethed. “I’m going to fix it so Oscar has to depend on me. Because he won’t have you anymore.”

“What are you talking about?” Steve questioned. He kept looking for a place to escape.

“Quit looking around. You’re not getting out of this. I’ve had this planned ever since Goldman called me.” Barney related.

“Had what planned Barney?” Steve questioned.

“Don’t talk to me like I’m a child!” Barney bellowed.

“Barney, I don’t mean any disrespect.” Steve began.

Barney continued to hold the gun. “You are gong to get in my car and come with me.” Barney ordered.

“I don’t think so...” Steve started.

“Oh I think you will You see I know a little secret Stevie boy.” Barney interrupted. “I know about Goldman’s kids. I also know that you have a very strong feeling for all four of them. I believe their names and Dan, Marc, Matt and Joey. Am I correct?”

Steve was astonished he wondered how Barney got that information. He slowly nodded.

“If you don’t come with me, I’ll go to Goldman’s new house in Arlington.”

“I see you’ve done your homework.” Steve said slowly.

“That’s right. I have. Now if you don’t come with me. I’ll have to cause an accident to as many of the little darlings as I can.” Barney threatened. “Especially to Marc.”

Steve stared at him. “What about Marc?”

“Let’s just say I know all about the bionic brat.” Barney hissed. “Don’t bother asking how I found out. Cause I won’t tell you.”

Steve stared at him in astonishment. “Ok I’ll go with you. Just don’t do anything to hurt the kids.” Steve followed Barney out to the car.

“I won’t as long as you cooperate with me.” Steve sat next to Barney in the front seat.

“So where are we going?” Steve asked.

“Somewhere where they will never find you.” Barney hissed. “I tell you. I have waited for this moment for a very long time.” Barney continued.

Barney reached for a syringe he had hidden between the seats. Steve was watching the way they were going. ‘At least once he drops me off I can make my way back.’ Steve thought.

Barney grabbed the syringe he glanced over at Steve to make sure he was occupied. Barney plunged the needle into Steve’s left arm Steve slumped over in the seat asleep.

Barney continued driving till he came to an abandoned house on the outskirts of Bethesda. He dragged Steve inside. And tied him to a chair with magnetic induction coil ropes.

He then left the house and headed back to the OSI to finish the tests.

“Barney, you’re back.” Oscar stated when he saw him. “Have you seen Steve?”

“Steve? Isn’t he here.” Barney tried to act surprised.

“That’s strange.” Oscar began “I thought he was with you.”

“I had some errands to run.” Barney stated. “I haven’t seen Steve since I left here.” He lied.

“Well I’m sure he’ll be here soon.” Rudy said. “Let see Barney. Why don’t I have you do a few things? I was going to run separate tests anyway. I’ll just go ahead and run yours then I’ll I do Steve’s later I can compare them at another time.”

“That sounds fine Rudy.” Barney smiled. ‘You better worry about Steve. He won’t be coming back.’

Barney went through the tests Rudy had for him. “Well everything seems to be just fine Barney.” Rudy informed him. “I just can’t figure out where Steve could be.”

“I’m getting very worried Rudy.” Oscar stated. “This isn’t like him at all.”

“Do you want me to go look for him Oscar?” Barney offered.

“If you don’t mind.” Oscar insisted.

“No not at all Oscar.” ‘I’ll look for him but I won’t find him.’ Barney smiled to himself.

“Thanks Barney I’d really appreciate it.” Oscar was relieved.

Barney jumped back in his car and headed back to Bethesda where he had left Steve. Steve was conscious when Barney returned. “They are very worried about you.” Barney informed him.

“Barney do yourself a favor. Just let me go and I won’t say a word “ Steve promised.

“Oh like I really believe that.” Barney stated. “They sent me to look for you. I will find you but regretfully you will be dead.” Barney seethed.

“Barney they’ll catch you.” Steve tried to explain.

“No they won’t. They will never suspect me.” Barney went on. “Then I will be the world’s only bionic man. The world’s only bionic human. Oscar will have to come to me.” Barney told him “ That is once I take care of Goldman’s kid.”

“Barney think about what you are doing.” Steve was trying to stall.

“Now, now. I have thought about it I have given it a great deal of thought to be real honest.” Barney explained.

Rudy have you heard anything. I mean has Barney called you?” Oscar wanted to know.

“No I haven’t Oscar.” Rudy glanced at his watch. “This isn’t like Steve at all.” Rudy observed.

“I’m getting very concerned Rudy.” Oscar proclaimed.

“Yea I am now too.” Rudy looked at Oscar. “Where do you suppose he is?” Rudy wondered.

“I just wish Barney would call.” Oscar said.

“Why don’t you call Carla? Maybe Barney called her.” Rudy offered.

“That sounds like a good idea. Oscar reached for the phone. And dialed Barney’s home number. Carla picked it up after the first ring. “Barney?” Carla said.

“No Carla. This is Oscar Have you heard from Barney in the last half hour or so?’

“No Oscar I haven’t. I’m really worried. I was just getting ready to call you myself.” Carla sounded upset.

“Well he left here about an hour ago to look for Steve. He’s missing too.” Oscar informed her.

Steve remained tied to the chair. Barney knew what he was doing. Steve couldn’t move at all.

“Come on Barney let me go. I’ll tell Oscar and Rudy to leave you tuned up. If that’s what you want.”

“You can’t be trusted. I’m going to tell Marc that as soon as I get hold of him.” Barney hissed. “I untie you and you turn me in. No way.”

“You’re right. Ok Barney I won’t lie to you. You’re right. I will turn you in. But I’ll have them take it easy on you.” Steve promised. He was getting tired of the whole thing. He wished he could move. “Just stay away from Marc.”

“Well I’ve had it with this.” Barney got up and moved across the room and picked up his gun off the counter. He made his way back to Steve.

“Oscar and Rudy sent me to look for you. I suppose they are getting worried about both of us.” Barney stated

He loaded the gun with bullets and walked back over to where Steve sat tied in the chair.

‘What am I going to do. How am I going to get out of this?’ Steve said to himself.

“Barney think about what you are about to do. I have a wife with a baby on the way. Don’t do this.” Steve begged

“No way Steve. I’m not going to fall for that.” Barney smirked.

“It’s true Barney. My wife Jaime is pregnant. Do you want my son to grow up with out a father?”

Barney shook his head. “I don’t know if that is true or not. But it doesn’t matter as I said. I have had this planned for sometime now. Barney raised the gun and aimed it straight at Steve. He slowly pulled the hammer back and started to slowly pull the trigger…

Just before Barney pulled the trigger the lights in the cabin went out. The electricity powering the induction coil ropes went dead. Steve quickly freed him self and moved out of the way just as Barney shot.

“No, no. That’s not fair.” Barney cried.

Before Barney knew what was going on Steve got the gun away from him. “Ok Hiller. I was going to have them take it easy on you. But not now.” Steve continued to hold the gun.

“You think your going to get away from me?” Barney stated. “Listen, you are going to do as I say or Goldman’s kids re going to pay the price. I’ll just tell Oscar you are lying. You want them to think I’m crazy. I will convince them you are crazy.” Barney continued.

“Come on Barney.” Steve tried to reason. “Listen to what you are saying.”

“I have been listening I’ve been listening for the past year and better since you convinced Rudy and Oscar I would be better off tuned down.” Barney argued.

“Barney the reason I told them to tune you down is because you couldn’t handle it.” Steve held the gun on him. “I mean Oscar’s son Marc adjusted better than you.” Steve told him.

“We will see how well he is adjusted when I get through with him.” Barney seethed.

“Barney don’t you dare hurt Marc. If you do then I’ll kill you.”

“I guess you’ll have to get Goldman’s oldest son to defend you that is if you can convince him to leave medicine.” Barney related.

Steve was so astounded by the information Barney seemed to have, he lost his grip on the gun.

Barney quickly grabbed it. “Now you are going to take me to Goldman’s house I want to meet this bionic kid.”

“I don’t know where he is right now.” Steve continued to lie. He couldn’t let this creep anywhere near Marc.

Barney now had the gun. Again he aimed it at Steve “You are going to take me to him right now.” Barney hissed.

“I’m sorry Barney. I won’t do it you are just going to have to kill me.” Steve informed him. “As you wish. I can find him myself.” He fired the gun hitting Steve in the chest. Steve fell over backward and lost consciousness.

Barney looked down at Steve lying on the ground. “I’m so sorry Steve. I’ll just have to tell them I wasn’t able to find you.”

Barney got in his car and headed back to the OSI leaving Steve where he was. He arrived back within a few minutes. Oscar was going nuts. Jaime sat beside him. “Don’t worry Jaime we’ll find him.” Oscar was trying to assure her when Barney walked into his office.

“Jaime,” Oscar started to introduce. “This is Barney Hiller he has been searching for Steve. Barney, this is Jaime She’s Steve’s wife.”

Barney looked at her. “Steve told me earlier, you’re going to have a baby?” Barney asked.

“Yes I am. I’m only a few weeks along right now, but they say I’m going to have a baby.” Jaime told him.

“Did you have any luck Barney?” Oscar asked.

“I’m sorry Oscar I couldn’t find him.” Barney lied. “Earlier he was telling me about your son.”

“I have four, which one.” Oscar laughed.

“The one who is bionic?” Barney asked. “I believe he said his name was Marc?”

Oscar was taken aback he knew Steve would never tell Barney about Marc.

“I think Steve is telling you stories.” Oscar related. “None of my children are bionic.” Oscar continued. “Marc is only 8 Rudy would never perform that surgery on a child. “You say you couldn’t find Steve? I just can’t under stand where he could be.” Oscar tried to change the subject.

“I’m telling you Oscar. It’s history repeating itself. Jaime cried interrupting the conversation.

“No it’s not Jaime. We’ll find him.” Oscar assured.

Steve remained unconscious for several minutes after Barney left. Then he slowly came around. ‘I can’t believe this. He actually shot me.’ Steve thought. ‘I have to get help some how.’

Steve crawled back to the house Barney had held him in. ‘Maybe he has a phone in there.’ Steve thought. He crawled up the steps and across the porch. It was all he could do to stay conscious.

Steve managed to get into the house. He made his way over to where the phone was. He reached to grab the receiver but didn’t make it. He lost consciousness again.

“I don’t think so Oscar. “ Jaime started. This is supposed to happen.” Jaime started crying.

‘You know what I suspect?’ Oscar whispered to Jaime ‘I bet he went out to the house. You know how he feels about the kids. Especially if he knows Barney knows about Marc. I bet he’s there watching out for them.’

Jaime nodded. “Yea I bet you’re right.”

‘Let’s go see. I’ll make some excuse to Barney.’ He continued to whisper.

“So Oscar is it true. Is your son Marc bionic?” Barney pressed.

“Of course it’s not true Barney.” Oscar lied. “Like I said. Rudy would never perform that kind of operation on a child. Now if you will excuse us I need to give Jaime a ride out to my place “

“I understand.” Barney stiffened himself. ‘I’ll just have a little chat with Rudy.’ He thought.

Jaime and Oscar left Oscar’s office. “I want to stop off and talk to Rudy for just a second Maybe Steve contacted him. Plus I want to let him know that Barney might be asking him about Marc.”

“I’ll be in the car.” Jaime said as she headed for the elevator.

“Ok I’ll be down in just a few minutes.” Oscar headed for Rudy’s office. “Rudy Barney is asking questions about Marc, Barney. A He claim Steve told him Marc was bionic.”

“No way would Steve never.” Rudy started and then stopped. Barney was standing in the doorway. “Hi Barney, what can I do for you?” Rudy asked.

“Well I wanted to ask you something.” Barney thought quickly. “When did you want to start tuning me down?” He was furious. ‘I figured Oscar would beat me to it.’

“Well Barney we can start any time.” Rudy told him “This is just as good a time as any.” Rudy suggested.

“I’d really rather wait if you don’t mind.” Barney wondered

“Well listen Rudy we are on our way back to my place I want to see if Steve is with the kids.”

“I bet that is where he is.” Rudy agreed.

“That is what we suspect.” Oscar turned to leave. “I have to go, Jaime is waiting for me in the car.”

“Let me know when you find him.” Rudy said then turned back to Barney. “I guess we could wait till tomorrow. It’s just that it takes a while. I figured you could ‘sleep’ it off.” Rudy went on.

“I’d really rather wait till morning.” Barney restated.

“Ok Barney be here by 8:00” Rudy gave him a slight wave.

Barney headed out of Rudy’s office He knew where Oscar lived so he didn’t need to follow Oscar. He would go out to Oscar’s house later and wait for the right moment, then he would take Marc. ‘Steve I’m sure by now is dead. And I can’t have some little brat be stronger then me. I’ll have to take care of him.’

“Again Steve came around He could tell he had lost a lot of blood, to much. Again he reached for the phone. This time he was able to dial. He thought it was best to call Rudy he dialed Rudy’s number.

Rudy picked it up on the first ring. “Hello.” He spoke into the phone.

“Rudy?” Steve spoke his voice barely audible

“Steve? Is that you? Where are you? We’re going crazy around here looking for you.”

“Rudy, Barney shot me He’s after Marc tell Jaime too…” was all he got out.

“What? Steve where are you?” Rudy called into the phone.

There was no answer. Rudy grabbed his other phone and called security, “Trace this call! Now!!” He shouted.

Then he went back to the phone Steve had called on. “Steve. Can you hear me?” Rudy called into the phone. “Listen if you can hear me I’m on my way ok?”

Still Rudy got no answer.

Security came into Rudy’s office and gave him the location of where Steve was. “I’m on my way. If Oscar asks tell him I’ll be right back.”

Before he left he made sure everything was ready so he could get Steve straight into surgery at National Medical Center. Then he called Minnie and told her to keep the kids inside

At Oscar’s house Oscar and Jaime were both disappointed that Steve wasn’t there.

“Where could he be Oscar?” Jaime continued to cry.

“What’s wrong dad?” Marc asked.

“Nothing. We just don’t seem to know where Steve is. He didn’t say anything to you did he?”

“I haven’t seen Steve since this morning.” Marc told him “Is there anything I can do?”

“Yes Marc. Stay here and if he comes by tell him we are looking for him. Can you do that?”

“I sure can dad.”

“Ok then I’m counting on you.” Before they left Minnie came running to them. “Dr. Wells just called. He knows where Steve is. Barney shot him. He’s on his way right now he said to meet him at the hospital.

As they left they didn’t see Barney’s car parked in the clump of trees across the road.

Rudy had taken a medic and ambulance from the National Medical Center to pick up Steve.

Rudy drove to the address that security had given him. “This must be the place.” He said when he got out of the car. “Now we just have to find him.”

“I don’t see him Doctor.” The medic stated.

“He has to be here somewhere.” Rudy continued looking around. Then he saw the trail of blood leading into the house. “He’s inside.” Rudy called out.

He ran into the house He found Steve unconscious on the floor. Steve’s clothes were soaked in blood. Rudy didn’t see how he would ever survive…

Fearing the worst Rudy bent down and reached for Steve’s pulse. It was there. It was weak but there was one.

“Steve.” Rudy called out. “Steve, can you hear me?” Rudy watched him close but there was no response Rudy got up and ran for the door. He motioned for the medic to bring the gurney inside. They got Steve on it and put him in the back of the ambulance.

Rudy rushed Steve into surgery the minute they arrived. While Steve was being prepared for surgery Rudy stepped out into the hall where he had seen Jaime and Oscar waiting.”I guess Minnie gave you the message.”

“Yea Rudy.” Oscar began “how is he”

“I don’t know yet. Is Minnie keeping the kids inside?”

“I think so. I’ll call and remind her.” Oscar headed for the phone and Rudy headed into the OR to take care to Steve.

At the house Minnie took the call. “That’s ok. Take as long as you need. I’ll just get the kids ready for bed. And I’ll keep them all inside.”

“Thanks Minnie. Russ is looking for Barney.” Oscar informed her.

“Ok then call as soon as you know anything.” Minnie stated.

“I will. I’m sending a security team out to the house to keep an eye on things. I need to get back to Jaime;”

Oscar

hung up and went back to where Jaime stood. “Any word yet?”

“No obviously Rudy is still in surgery.” Jaime was still crying.

“Don’t worry, he’ll be all right.” Oscar tried not only to reassure her but himself as well.

Barney sat waiting for Marc to come outside. When he saw the OSI security force come up to Oscar’s house he slowly drove out of the trees and left. The security team didn’t pay a whole lot of attention since the car was heading away from the house.

Oscar and Jaime stood for what seemed like forever waiting for Rudy to come out and give them Steve’s condition. They were relived when the door finally opened.

“Well?” Oscar asked stepping close to Rudy.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought. The bullet missed the lung. It missed it by only a fraction, but it missed it.” Rudy started explaining.

“That’s good.” Jaime sounded relieved. “Is he going to be alright?”

“Yes he is. He’s going to need a lot of rest, but he’ll be just fine. He lost a lot of blood but I’m replacing that now.” Rudy continued. “Have they found Barney yet?”

“No not yet. Anyway not that I know of I’ve been here ever since I put out the APB.” Oscar walked into Rudy’s office to check on the status.

He picked up the phone and dialed Russ’ car phone.

“Nothing yet Oscar we were going to stake out the house he held Steve in but figured he wouldn’t return there. We left a man there just in case. How’s Steve?”

“I think he’s going to be all right. Rudy said it wasn’t as bad as he thought I’ll have the DC police assist you.”

“Thanks Oscar that would help. The security team is in place at your place. I’m glad Steve is going to be ok.”

“Yea me to. Listen I need to get back to them.”

“Ok I’ll keep you posted.”

Barney continued to drive along he thought the whole time. “They must have found him. Otherwise why would they have a security team at the house.” He muttered to himself.

“He must have told them I was after Marc. Well the kid I can deal with later. I have to take care of Steve first.”

Barney headed in the general direction of the hospital “Col. Austin will die tonight I will see to that. I know just what I am going to do to. I will sneak into to The Bionic’s Section and then into Steve’s room. He will never wake up.”

After speaking to Russ. Oscar rejoined Jaime and Rudy outside Steve’s room.

“Did they find Barney?” Rudy asked

“No they didn’t they are still looking but as least the security team is in place at my house. They have strict instructions that if Barney comes anywhere near my place they are to shoot to kill.”

“That might be best considering the alternative “ Rudy sighed.

“What’s the alternative?” Jaime wondered

Oscar turned to her. “Jaime, Barney is going to prison for attempted murder and if he goes near my place I’ll add attempted kidnapping to the mix.”

“I understand that much.” Jaime stated.

“Jaime we won’t allow him to keep his bionic limbs. He can’t.” Rudy explained.

“Oh I see. Rudy how much longer till I can see Steve?

”I’m sorry Jaime you can go on in.” Rudy held the door for her. “Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t respond to you.” Rudy warned.

“I just want to sit with him.” Jaime stepped in

Jaime and Rudy both walked over to Steve. To Rudy’s surprise Steve slowly opened his eyes. “Jaime?’ He whispered.

“Yea honey, I’m here. Don’t try to talk.”

“Jaime you stay here. Don’t let Barney find out about you. Is Marc ok?”

Jaime nodded “Security is at Oscar’s if Barney so much as drives by they are instructed to shoot to kill.”

“Good.” Steve stated.

Rudy leaned close to him. “Steve do you feel strong enough to answer any questions?” Rudy asked.

“Yea I guess.” Steve’s voice sounded weak.

“We still can’t find Barney. Do you have any idea as to where he might have gone?”

Steve shook his head. Then thought a moment. “When I first followed him after leaving you and Oscar. He went to an abandoned building in Maryland. I couldn’t give you the address though. It was just outside of Bethesda.”

“We’ll look into it. Listen I’ll be in my office all night. Jaime will be in a room down the hall she doesn’t want to leave you. If you need anything just holler.”

“I will.” Steve promised then went back to sleep.”

“Jaime. Maybe I better get you settled for the night.” Rudy led her to a room down the hall. The he checked with Oscar and told him about Steve’s first encounter with Barney in Bethesda.

“I’ll have it looked into.” Oscar went straight for the phone. “Then I think I better get home and see about my family.”

“That sounds like a good idea. I’ll be here all night, “ Rudy informed him

Oscar left and headed home. Jaime lay down in the room Rudy put her in but she knew she would not get any sleep till Barney Hiller was behind bars.

Rudy decided to get caught up on a project he and been working on for months. He was actually getting ready to turn the whole idea over to Danny if he didn’t come up with something very soon.

Rudy was calling it a global finder. If it worked the way Rudy wanted it to it find anybody anywhere‘

He sat up most of the night working on it.

He did get up once. He walked down to Steve’s room to see how he was doing.

Steve wasn’t sleeping very well himself. He too knew he wouldn’t rest till barney was caught or killed.

“Any word yet Rudy?” Steve asked His voice still sounded weak.

“No Steve nothing yet.” Rudy informed him. “I just wanted to see how you were coming along.”

“Well I feel a little better than the last time you were in here. I’m not getting much sleep though.”

“I don’t think any of us are.” Rudy agreed.

“I keep wondering what Barney is up to.” Steve whispered.

“Yea me to. I wonder if they caught him yet?” Rudy wondered

“I’m sure Oscar would let us know.”

“Yea I guess you are right.” Rudy agreed. “You get some rest, try to get some sleep I’ll see you later this morning.”

“Ok.” Steve closed his eyes and fell in to a restless sleep.

Barney Hiller had been hanging around the hospital most of the night. He was waiting to make his move. ‘The idiots they will never think to look for me here. They are to busy guarding Oscar’s house.’ He thought to himself.

He glanced at his watch it was only 6:30. ‘I’ll wait till after midnight there won’t be to many people around at that time.’

He sat for a long time in the cafeteria sulking and growing angrier by the moment he knew he was going to be in big trouble. ‘I’ll have to leave the country’ He thought as he sipped a cup of coffee.

‘Maybe the Russians would like a bionic man working for them.’ He continued to think ‘As soon as I take care of Austin for good. I’ll catch the next flight.’ He walked over to the pay phone and arranged for the flight to Moscow

Now he sat in the lounge it was about 12:30 Barney stood ‘Time to make my move’ He slipped up stairs the back way. He had been in the bionics section before himself. He knew how to get in with out the guard seeing.

Once inside he crept down the hall and searched for the room Steve was using. There was no guard outside the room that was to be taken care of at the main entrance

Barney looked up and down the hall there was no one around He slipped into Steve’s room and strode over to where Steve lay sleeping.

“I will now be the worlds only bionic man.” Barney whispered as he pulled the cover’s off of Steve’s right side.

He removed a pocketknife he had brought along with him He slowly began to cut Steve’s arm open.

“Just what I was looking for.” Barney whispered once again. He reached over and grabbed the power supply pack out of Steve’s arm then left the room and building…

Steve was aware of what was going on. The minute Barney left Steve called out to Jaime. “Jaime! Get Rudy in here fast!”

Jaime jumped out of bed. She didn’t waste any time she dialed the number to Rudy’s

“Yes. He spoke into the phone.”

“Rudy its Jaime…”

“What’s the problem Rudy called into the phone.

“I don’t know. He just called out to me telling me to get you fast.” Jaime cried into the phone.

“I’ll be right down.” Rudy slammed the phone down and raced down to Steve’s room Jaime was just going in when Rudy got there.

Rudy hurried to Steve’s side. Steve was barely conscious. “Steve? What is it? What’s wrong?” Rudy leaned over to him.

“Barney was here.” Steve barely got out. He managed to move his left hand over and indicate what Barney had done.”

“Rudy! Jaime shouted. “Barney removed…”

“I know Jaime. Just hang on Steve. We’ll get you fixed up.

Rudy raced down to the lab and grabbed a new power supply pack he quickly replaced it in Steve’s arm.

“Feeling better?” Rudy asked.

“Yea. Much better. Did you call Oscar?” Steve looked up at him.

Rudy shook his head. “Not yet. My main concern was for you.”

“Yea ok. Maybe you should call him.” Steve suggested.

“I will. It’s late. But I’ll call him. If it’s like the way we are here I’m sure Oscar isn’t sleeping much either.”

Rudy was right. Oscar picked up the phone on the first ring. “Rudy what is it? Is Steve alright?”

“Yea just barely though.” Rudy replied.

“What happened?” Oscar called into the phone

“Barney made an appearance here tonight.” Rudy reported.

“He what? Were they able to get him?” Oscar asked. He was on his feet ready to get dressed and head into town.

“No Oscar. They didn’t catch him. He some how broke security he entered Steve’s room and removed his power pack.”

“You’re not serious? Is Steve alright?” He was pulling clothes out of drawers as he spoke.

“Yea Oscar he’s going to be fine. I replaced it. He’s going to be just fine.”

“Well that’s a relief. Listen Rudy I’ll be there as soon as I can. Minnie stayed here tonight since Russ was out looking for Barney. I’ll just tell her I’m leaving.”

“Ok then I’ll be expecting you. Steve is sleeping right now. I posted a guard outside his room.” Rudy told him.

“That’s a good idea. I’m on my way.” Oscar quickly dressed and after informing Minnie he was leaving headed for the hospital.

He caught up with Rudy outside Steve’s room “How is he?” Oscar asked.

“He’s still sleeping.” Rudy told him “I gave him a sedative to help the process. He was afraid to fall asleep for fear Barney would show up again. He should sleep most of the morning. Any word on Barney?”

“I spoke to Russ on the way in. They still haven’t found him.” Oscar sighed.

“Have Russ report here before they head out again. I have something that might be useful.”

“What’s that Rudy?” Oscar wanted to know.

“A tranquilizer gun. They just need to nick Barney with it in the neck or whatever and they won’t have to fight him.”

“I’ll tell him. He should be here in an hour or so. I told them I wanted everyone to regroup.”

“I’ll be in my office. That’s where I have the gun. Just have Russ check in with me.”

“I will Thanks Rudy. I think I’ll sit in with Steve for a while.”

“Ok Oscar. But try not to disturb him.” He pointed to the other door. “Jaime is asleep too.”

“I won’t disturb either one. I just want to be with Steve incase he wakes up.” Oscar noted.

“Well don’t count on that one for a little while.” Rudy explained. He headed for his office and Oscar headed into Steve’s room.

Oscar sat watching Steve. At least he looked better than he had the night before when Rudy had first brought him down from surgery. His color had come back and despite the latest incident he ‘looked ‘ like his strength was coming back.

An hour later Rudy poked his head in. “Oscar’ He whispered. “They got him. They are on their way with him. I have to get ready for surgery.” Rudy told him.

“Surgery?” Is he hurt?”

“No Oscar I have to start well, the you know I’m going to remove his bionics.” Rudy stated quietly.

“Yes, yes. I understand. I forgot.” Oscar replied. “I’ll just stay here with Steve. Let me know when you’re done. I would like to speak to Barney Hiller.”

“Of course Oscar I’ll keep you informed.” Rudy headed off to perform the unbionic surgery on Barney.

While Oscar sat waiting for word on Barney and for Steve to wake up Jaime stepped into the room.

“How is he?” She whispered.

“He’s doing better. Did you hear? They caught Barney.” Oscar informed her.

“Well that’s good.” Jaime stated. “Where is he?”

“Rudy has him in surgery right now. He’s removing Barney’s bionics. He’ll be going to prison tomorrow morning.”

“Well that’s good. “ Jaime replied.

“Oscar” Steve called out.

“Yea Steve. I’m right here.” Oscar moved closer to him.

“Where’s Jaime?” He asked his voice sounded stronger than the night before.

“I’m right here Steve.” Jaime moved closer to him also.

“Have they caught Barney yet?” Steve asked trying to sit up.

“Yes they have Steve just relax Rudy wants you to just lie still for a while.” Oscar told him.

“Where’s Rudy?” Steve asked still trying to sit up. His voice was completely back to normal

“He’s in surgery with Barney.” Oscar explained.

“In surgery? With Barney?” Steve gave him a quizzical look.

“Steve. Barney is going to prison for trying to kill you…” He quickly told Steve what was going on.

“Well I can’t say I feel sorry for him. I tried to reason with him. I told him I had a wife and a baby on the way. I begged him to not let my son grow up with out a father. He shot me anyway and with a smile on his face.” Steve added.

Oscar and Steve were still talking when Rudy stepped into the room. “Well I’m glad to see you’re feeling better.” He walked over to Steve.

“Yea I feel better. When do I get out of here anyway?” Steve demanded.

Rudy smiled and turned to Oscar. “I see his attitude has returned as well.”

“There is no way you could remove it could you Rudy?” Oscar laughed.

“It’s a very long operation.” Rudy joked back.

“How did the surgery with Barney go?” Steve asked getting serious. “Oscar filled me in on what’s been going on.”

“It was as ‘successful’ as it could be I guess. Barney no longer has his bionic limbs.” Rudy informed them. We will provide him with the best artificial limbs money can buy outside of bionics.” Rudy told them.

“You still didn’t answer my question. When can I go home?” Steve asked again.

“I want to see how you’re doing in the morning. Maybe the next day we’ll see.” Rudy made no promises.

After leaving Steve’s room Oscar and Rudy stepped into another room Barney was just coming around from his own surgery.

Rudy stood over him. “Barney.” He called out

“Well it looks like someone managed to get me back here.” He muttered. ‘Now I can really make my move on Steve. I guess I don’t need bionic strength for that. Just a pillow over the face…’

“Barney, how are you feeling?” Rudy asked.

“I’m not sure. I feel a little strange. Rudy, just how far did you tune me down.” Barney demanded. “I can’t move anything.”

“Barney. I’m afraid you are going to prison for trying to kill Steve. You’re going to need a lawyer for that we’ll get you a list.” Rudy started.

“That doesn’t explain why I can’t…”

“Barney.” Rudy interrupted. “You will not be able to keep your bionics…” Rudy proceeded to tell him exactly what was going on.

“The authorities will be here first thing in the morning to take you to jail.” Rudy’s voice was cold.

“I understand.” Was all Barney said.

Two days later Steve sat in Rudy’s office Jaime sat beside him. “So you said I can go home today?” Steve asked.

“Yea. I want to see you in a couple of days I want to run some more tests. I want you to take it easy for several days though. You lost a lot of blood. I replaced it but I still want you to take it easy.”

“I’ll see to it that he does.” Jaime promised.

“I’m anxious to see how things are going on the outside world.” Steve exclaimed. Has anything changed?” He joked.

“No not to much “ Rudy began. “Just that now the sky is green and the grass is blue. I think you’ll get used to it in time. The rest of us have.”

“Very funny Rudy.” Steve laughed. “But everything is fine with me.”

“Well yes but you’re not 100 percent yet. I don’t want you running around and all. That’s why I’m holding off your tests till I feel you’re strong enough.” Rudy informed him

“Yea well I’ll be careful.” He stood up and put his arm around Jaime “Thanks for every thing Rudy.” Steve stated. “Come on Jaime I want to stop by Oscar’s on the way home and see how my favorite little partner is doing.”

“He’ll be glad to see you.” Rudy told him. “He’s been worried about you.”

“Well we better get going then.” Rudy watched as Steve and Jaime headed hand in hand down the hall.
