...Continued

A half an hour later Steve sat in Gregory’s office. “Glad to see you showed up Col. Gregory said. “Other wise I would have had to issue an arrest warrants.”

“Just tell me where you want me to go.” Steve was still angry.

“You are going to the middle east.” Gregory told him. “There is trouble over there.”

“When isn’t there. I’d rather help with trouble you’re going to have in South East Asia” Steve muttered.

“What does that mean?” Gregory seethed He really didn’t like the way Steve was talking to him.

“It means never send a boy to do a man’s job.” Steve continued to mutter.

“Look Col. I feel you have all had it to soft over the years. I’m not soft. Now here is your assignment.” He handed Steve a file. “You can read it on the plane then destroy the file.”

“I would rather go to Asia and assist Marc.” Steve stood to leave.

“You will go where I tell you to go!” Gregory shouted. “Now you better get going!”

“All right I’ll go, but Gregory, you and I are going to have a long chat when I get back.” Steve told him

“Just make an appointment with Zelda, She can maybe fit you in somewhere around the 12th of Never.”

Steve turned to Gregory. “You mean I can’t discuss assignments with you? Oscar always…”

“Oscar Goldman is not in charge anymore. I’m not a friend to my agents. I discovered a long time ago. You can’t be.”

“Well maybe you should. You see I can’t respect a person I’m not friends with.” Steve snorted as he left. Steve headed for the airport where he caught a flight to the Middle East.

Steve had to change planes at Heathrow Airport in London. He no more got in the airport when he was called to the podium. It was Gregory. “Steve. Get back here. Marc’s in trouble.” Gregory called into the phone.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“What happened?” Steve asked when Oscar met him at Dulles.

“We don’t know. Marc was supposed to call as soon as he got there. We haven’t heard anything from him. Gregory has a plane ready for you to go straight to Thailand.”

“You don’t suppose they were on to him the minute he landed? Steve wondered.

“That’s exactly what I suspect. Steve. You have to find him!!” Oscar cried.

“I will Oscar. I’m on my way!” Steve called out as he raced toward his plane.

“Did he get going Oscar?” Gregory asked when he caught up to Oscar.

“Yea. His flight was early. I told him to get going.”

“I just don’t understand why Marc hasn’t called.” Gregory was stumped.

“Steve and I suspect they were on to him before he got there.” Oscar sighed.

“Does he know where to look?” Gregory asked

“I gave him the same file you gave Marc. And if you say one word Gregory I’ll file my own charges.” Oscar shouted then stormed away.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Steve’s plane landed at a small landing field in Thailand. He was on the same track Marc had gone on. His assignment involved retrieving top-secret information that had been sold through an underground informant. Marc’s job was to get the documents and smash the organization.

Steve read about the particulars of the mission while he flew over. “I’ll get the documents, then find Marc.” Steve said to himself. “I just wonder where they have him?”

He found the building where the file said the documents were being kept. He opened the safe. The documents were gone.

“Oh great. Now what?” Steve wondered. “They have probably killed Marc and moved the documents to another area.”

Steve was just getting ready to give up and leave. “What are you doing here?” He heard a voice call from behind him. Startled Steve whirled around.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“What kind of charges are you talking about?” Gregory demanded.

“Endangering he welfare of a child to start off with.” Oscar sneered.

“You have got to be kidding.” Gregory laughed. “Marc is a highly qualified agent.”

“He’s eight years old.” Oscar reminded. “And if he’s highly qualified as you assume, why hasn’t he called?” Oscar demanded

Gregory shook his head. “I really don’t know.” He sighed.

“I just hope Steve is able to find him. If anything has happened to him Gregory, anything at all. I’ll see to it that you lose your job.” Oscar stated as he walked away.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“Marc.” Steve called “You scared me to death.” Steve told him. “Are you alright?”

“Yea, but you didn’t answer my question. What are you doing here?” Marc looked almost angry.

“I came to see if you were alright.” Steve walked over to him.

“Really? Gregory actually cared enough to send someone to help me.” Marc scoffed.

“Marc, what has gotten into you?” Steve moved closer to him. “Why didn’t you call when you landed? Those were your instruction. Your father is worried sick.”

“Is that the reason Gregory sent you?” Marc scowled.

“We were all worried as to why you didn’t call.” Steve was standing right beside him now. “Are you sure you’re alright?” Steve tried to put his arm around him but Marc shrank away.

“I tried to call but nobody answered. That’s how much they care.” Marc cried.

“They have been waiting for you call for hours Marc.” Steve corrected.

“I dialed Gregory’s number, anyway the number he gave me.” Marc pulled the paper with numbers written on it out of his pocket and showed it to Steve.” Steve looked at the DC phone number. “Marc, didn’t you dial the country code?”

“The what?” Marc sounded like his old self again.

“The country code son. You remember me telling you about area codes?”

Marc nodded. “Yea Steve. I remember. What’s a country code?”

“It works the same way. You have to dial a special number to get the country you want.”

“I didn’t think anybody cared.” Marc cried.

“Well they do son. And don’t worry we are working on a plan to get Gregory out of your fathers office.

“I sure hope it works.” Marc sighed.

“Yea me to. The documents you were sent to get aren’t in the file where they are supposed to be….”

“That’s because I have it.” Marc pulled it out from under his jacket.

“Great let’s get out of here.” Steve suggested. I’ll call and tell everyone you are all right.”

After Steve got home with Marc and handed the documents over to Gregory. “Here you go.” He tossed them at him. “Like I said never send a boy to do a man’s job.” Steve thought it best not to mention Marc already had the documents in hand when he found him.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“Why didn’t he call?” Gregory had asked. When Steve arrived back at the OSI.

“He didn’t know that you had to dial the country code first.” Steve anger had returned and he had almost thrown Gregory out the window.

What do you mean?” Gregory hissed.

“Just what I said” Steve fumed. “A kid Marc’s age just doesn’t know what to do. You need to send someone with him to show him.”

“I can’t spare two agents for the same mission.” Gregory shot at Steve.

“Well then maybe you better not send a child to do the job.” Steve shouted.

“I’ll send who ever the hell I want. You can go now Col.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“I was angry Oscar I could have picked him up and thrown him out of your window.”

“I wish you would have.” Oscar said as they sat talking that night. “Marc was fine when you found him?”

“Yea. He was just fine. He was a little upset cause he felt he had been deserted but after I explained everything to him he was fine.”

“I’m glad. Thanks for helping out Steve.”

“No problem. Look Oscar I’ve been doing quite a bit of thinking. I think it would be a good idea if you were to turn custody of Dan and the twins over to Jaime and I…”

“Steve I won’t…” Oscar started.

“Oscar you have no choice. If Jaime and I have custody we can get them away from here. Away from Gregory.” Steve started.

“It doesn’t work that way Steve.”

Everyone turned to see Danny standing in the doorway. Gregory is heartless. Even if you do take us Gregory will stop at noting to get us back.”

“He has a point Steve.” Oscar sighed.

“I guess your right. What are we going to do? He won’t stop. You know that.”

“I think I have a way to stop him.” Danny stated. “I think I have a way to not only stop him but get dad his job back as well.”

“What are you up to?” Oscar asked.

“Well while Steve was in Thailand with Marc I took the liberty of making a few phone calls.” Dan smiled.

“And whom did you call?” Jaime wondered.

“The department of Children and families.” Dan continued to smile. “The way I see it is he is breaking every child labor law there is.”

“Oh Dan, please tell you didn’t.” Oscar pleaded. “I don’t know if I have the strength to go ten rounds with them again.”

“Dad I didn’t turn you in. I turned Gregory in.” Dan turned to him

“What do you mean Dan?” Jaime asked

“Gregory has broken every child labor law there is.” Dan explained. “He can’t use us kids no matter what.” Dan went on. “He keeps me locked in a room smaller that most closets. He never lets me out.”

“That does sound like child abuse to me.” Steve said. “I still think you should turn custody over to us. Let us be the ones to take care of Gregory.” Steve said. “If we have custody then DCFS won’t be so to take the kids from a two parent home rather than a single father.”

“You might have a point there, Steve. Meet me at my lawyer’s office first thing in the morning.”

“Oscar, its just temporary.” Jaime assured. “We just want what’s best for the kids.”

“I know.” Oscar sighed. “I just am not real happy with the idea. I’ll see you in the morning at my lawyers.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

The next morning after explaining everything to his lawyer the custody hearing went quickly Steve and Jaime walked out of the courthouse with papers saying Dan and the twins were their children.

“To make this look legitimate we need to take the kids home with us.” Steve said.

“Yea I know.” Oscar turned to his kids. “I hope everybody knows what they are doing.”

“We do dad, don’t worry.” Dan assured.

“Come on kids. We have call we have make.” Steve said as they headed for Steve’s car.

“Jaime you wait here with the kids. I’ll be right back.” Steve got out of the car and headed up to ‘Gregory’s office. ‘

“Col. Austin. I didn’t call for you, what are you doing here.” Gregory was angry Steve had interrupted him.

“I just wanted to tell you something Gregory. He tossed the custody papers on the desk.

“What is this?” Gregory asked.

“The kids belong to Jaime and I now. “Well Dan and the twins anyway. You have to go through me now to have them work here. Now. None of us work here. I’m taking my family and we are moving.”

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Remember that arrest warrant I told you about earlier, I can still issue one.”

“For what?” Steve demanded

“Kidnapping!” Gregory shot at him

“You can’t be arrested for kidnapping you own kids. I have the custody papers to prove they are mine.” Steve seethed

“Well “ Gregory thought for a moment “I’ll think of something.”

“I’m sure you will. But in the mean time Gregory. Don’t try to find us.” Steve slammed the door and was gone

“I’ll do everything to try and find you.” Gregory shouted behind him.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

After his meeting Steve jumped into the car. “I heard that you know.” Jaime looked at Steve. “He’s not going to let us go, you know that?”

“Steve turned to the back “You hear it to Marc?”

Marc nodded.

Steve turned back to Jaime “Jaime I have to protect these kids. There is no way Gregory is going to use them.”

“Well be prepared, He will not give up till he finds us.” Jaime sighed. “If we even get to leave in the first place.”

“We will you’ll see. Lets go home and pack.”

Oscar was waiting for them when they got back to the house. “Rudy called. You better not try this. Gregory is furious.” He warned.

“He is huh. Well I’ve got news for Gregory, he hasn’t seen furious.” Steve fumed.

“Look, I know how you feel, but its not worth it Steve.” Oscar sighed.

Steve watched the kids tumble out of the backseat. “Are they worth it Oscar?”

“I see your point, but you know what’s going to happen don’t you?” Oscar started

“What’s going to happen?” Steve questioned. “I don’t think I follow what you are saying Oscar.”

“Steve. Gregory will not stop till he finds you. When he does he’ll have you and possibly Jaime arrested.”

“Yea? Well that’s a chance we’re willing to take.” Jaime spoke up.

“OK, ok. I just hope the two of you know what you’re doing.” Oscar whispered, “I know you’re trying to help, but maybe it’s to late for that.”

“I don’t believe that Oscar, and neither do you? Let me ask you. Do you want Dan and Marc to work for Gregory?”

“Of course not. I know they are both, well Marc at least is going to have to eventually work for the government in some way, but I was hoping he would be older.”

“Good then you agree with us.” Jaime added.

“Of course I do. All right wait till tonight. That will give you a pretty good head start.” Oscar walked over to the kids. “I don’t know what happened or how guys. But we think we are doing the right thing. You go with Steve and Jaime tonight. Maybe one day we can catch up to one another.”

“We understand dad.” Dan said. “There is no way Marc is going to work for him. Me either for that matter.”

“Sometimes I feel this is my fault.” Oscar stated. “If I would have let Danny help out the NSB that day…”

“Oscar you can’t blame yourself.” Jaime assured.

“Jaime is right. Gregory has been after your job for years.” Steve reminded.

“Yea, I guess you’re right.” He handed Steve a sheet of paper. “This has an address on it that no one knows about. Rudy says to put this add in the classified adds if you have any trouble, then meet him at this address.”

Steve took the paper from Oscar. “Tell him thanks. I hope we don’t have to use it. I’m hoping Gregory will come to his senses soon.”

“Ok then you guys take care. I won’t try to contact you unless there is an emergency. In which case I’ll place this add.” Oscar handed him another sheet of paper.

“Ok then we leave after it gets dark.” Steve announced

“What if they are watching the house?” Jaime asked.

“I have that covered. We slip out the back. I have a car waiting for us around the block. We take nothing with us. We’ll buy what we need along the way.”

“Sounds like a plan. Lets go inside I’ll make dinner then.” The four of them walked into the house. And Oscar went home.”

In a car up the block and across the street a man picked up his car phone. “Looks like they are calling it a night sir.” He spoke

“It doesn’t look they are going to run for it?” Gregory asked.

“No sir. Goldman left they talked for a long time. I think Goldman convinced them to stay.”

“Well that’s good I’ll pay them a visit it the morning

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

As soon as it was dark enough, Steve and his ‘family’ slipped out the back door. They carried nothing with them but the clothes on their backs. “I left the car over here.” Steve whispered as they crossed over to the next block.

They climbed into the car and drove off. Steve glanced at his watch “Its about 9:30. We should get at least a twelve-hour jump-start on them. You kids can just sleep when you need to.”

Gregory was at the house by 7:00 the following morning. He was furious. “They did it!” He screeched.

“What do we do now?” His aide asked.

“Get them back at all costs.” Gregory hollered, “Call the papers we have to come up with a convincing story.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Two days later Steve left his family in the hotel room while he went to buy a paper. He was shocked by the headlines.

Fugitive Family Escapes Justice It was complete with photos of all of them.

Steve quickly ran back up to the hotel room. “Jaime we have to go back.” He showed her the paper.

“I was hoping Gregory wouldn’t have found out so soon.” She sighed.

They arrived back at the OSI. They walked up to Gregory’s office. Gregory walked up to Steve “This time you are under arrest.” He turned to his men. “Get him out of here…”

“You can’t do that?” Jaime cried.

“I can and I did.” Gregory snapped. “If I had my way I would arrest you as well. If you weren’t pregnant I wouldn’t hesitate to send you as well. I will tell you this much you will no longer be teaching the twins. I will hire someone else for that.”

“They are my children. If I can’t teach them I want them in public school.” Jaime shouted.

“That is not possible.” Gregory stated. “Goldman only gave you custody so you could take them away from me. Well you found that didn’t work.”

Gregory stepped over to Danny “You need to get to work. I have stacked a number of items on the desk in your office. I want them all decoded by tonight. He then turned to the twins. “Now for you two.”

The twins ran and hid behind Jaime. “Get out here both of you!” Gregory screamed.

They stepped out from behind Jaime and walked over to where Gregory stood.

“Right this way Col. Austin.” The guard instructed as he led Steve to a cell in the basement of NSB headquarters. “You will stay here till Gregory sends you to the Federal Pen.”

“On what grounds?” Steve asked.

“Theft of Government property.” The guard explained.

“Meaning my wife and the kids.” Steve muttered.

“I guess that would be the size of it.” The guard shoved Steve into the cell and slammed the door.” By the way, the bars are titanium I doubt you will get away from here.”

The guard turned to leave. “Don’t I get a lawyer?” Steve wanted to know.

We’ll get one for you. Just relax Col. Austin.” The guard left the holding area.

The minute he left Steve did try to bend the bars. He was unable to. “That figures.” Steve muttered.

Another guard entered. “Your lawyer will be here soon.” He informed Steve. “We were told to not let you out of our sight. “I’m that dangerous huh?” Steve asked

“I don’t know its orders from Gregory. He says you are not to be left alone.” The guard sat at a desk not far from the cell Steve was being held in.

“When will my lawyer get here?” Steve was hoping to talk to Dan but figured that would be out of the question.

“I want to see my wife.” Steve called out. “Can I at least call her?”

“We’ll let you know when you can have visitors. Right now Gregory says you are to have none.

“Could I call her and let her know I’m…”

“No. Gregory says no phone calls in or out.” The guard explained. “He says he’ll be here later on today.”

“What ever.” Steve sat on the cot in the cell and stared at the floor.

“Could I at least have a magazine or newspaper?” He asked the guard.

“I think you’ll do good to sit and reflect as to why you are in there.” The guard suggested.

“I suppose that’s one Gregory’s orders as well.” Steve sighed. ‘How long is he going to let this drag out?’ Steve thought.

“Come on boys.” Gregory coaxed. “You’ll have fun, you’ll see.” Gregory started to lead them out of the room

“I think I’ll go see my husband. Where are you holding him Gregory?” Jaime asked

“I wouldn’t advise going to see him.” Gregory turned to her. “The guards have strict instructions he is to have no visitors of phone calls.”

“Well that’s just great.” Jaime shouted. “I think we should discus this…”

“Yes as do I. Mrs. Austin. Let me tend to this first.” He led the kids down the hall He stopped in front of Dan’s office nothing more than a cleared out storage closet. “You get to work.” He demanded.

He next let the twins to their new classroom. “Boys this is Mr. Johns, he will be your instructor from now on. You will do what he tells you to do. Do I make myself clear?”

The twins nodded.

“He will teach you how to be a good field agent. You need instruction in that.”

Again the twins nodded.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Jaime was still waiting when Gregory arrived back at his office. “I’m not going to be able to talk just yet. I have to get over to the NSB.”

“I want to see Steve!” Jaime demanded.

“I will see what I can do. You can pick your children up at 4:00 that’s when they will be done with their lessons.

Gregory turned and left her standing alone in Oscar’s office.

“Col. Austin.” Gregory began sitting across from him in the interview room

“I want to speak to an attorney first.” Steve told him.

“We told you, you would get a lawyer.” Gregory snapped.

“Well then I’ll just wait for him to arrive, then I’ll talk to you.” Steve snapped back.

“Very well, But you will not see your wife until I interview you.” Gregory closed his brief case and left the room.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“I don’t know Oscar I haven’t heard.” Rudy was saying when Jaime walked into Rudy’s office.

“Jaime!” Oscar called. Are you all right? We saw the paper. Rudy and I have wondered what was going on.”

“Well first of all Steve is in jail…”

“What? Oscar shouted.

“Gregory arrested him as soon as we got back.” Jaime explained. He also hired another teacher for the twins. I have no idea what he’s done with Danny.”

Their conversation was interrupted when Gregory and David Harrison walked into Rudy’s office.

“Mrs. Austin? Why are you still here?” Gregory demanded.

“I’m her Doctor.” Rudy spoke up. “As you can see she is pregnant. I am keeping a watch on the baby. If you have read all files you claim to have read Gregory, you know we are not dealing with an ordinary pregnancy. I am keeping a very close watch on it.” Rudy explained.

“I’ll give you that one. When Marc finishes his classes today. I’m sending him out again. Then I have to get back over to the NSB. Col. Austin’s lawyer will meet us there.”

“You really arrested him?” Oscar growled

“Yes we did.” Gregory stated.

He was just getting ready to leave Rudy’s office when a strange woman entered. “I’m looking for Mr. Gregory.” She stated.

“I’m Gregory” Gregory announced.

“I need to discuss the fact that you are over working children. Mr. Gregory, that is against the law.”

Once again Steve was led to the interview room. “Your lawyer is here.” The guard announced when he opened the cell.

“I must say it’s about time.” Steve grumbled.

“Right this way.” The guard opened the door. “Gregory should be here shortly.” The guard turned and locked the door.

“Now Steve why don’t you tell me what happened the lawyer began.

“All I want to do is protect Oscar Goldman’s kids.” Steve explained.

Gregory stood with his mouth wide open. “I uh, I…”

“Do you have children in your employ?”

“Well I guess I do…”

David Harrison watched the scene play out. “Oscar did you call?”

“No I didn’t, but I bet I know who did. Danny.”

“You’re oldest son?” Harrison asked.

“Yes. Dan is my oldest. He said he was going to turn Gregory in. Dan is very protective of his brothers.”

“I’m afraid you can not have children working for you. The young man told me you refuse to allow him to attend School.”

Gregory nodded.

“Gregory!” Harrison shouted. “I will not allow this agency to be drug down in a lawsuit. You are fired.” He turned to Oscar. I’m sorry Goldman. Would you please come back to us?”

“On a couple of conditions Harrison.”

“What would that be Goldman?”

“First of all you call right now and have Steve released from jail.”

“Consider it done, and the other thing?” Harrison asked.

“I control my agents, no one else.” Oscar stated.

“You have a deal. I’ll call right now and have Steve released at once.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“Its great to see you back behind that desk Oscar.” Steve said when he walked into Oscar’s office.

“Its great to be back. In fact everyone is back where they belong.” Oscar stated, “Dan is back in school and Jaime is at the house with the twins. They left as soon as Harrison called to have you released.”

“That was no fun.” Steve commented sitting across from Oscar.

“I’m sorry it had to happen Steve. Maybe I should have given into Gregory.

“What do you mean?” Steve wondered.

“It all started because the NSB wanted to borrow Danny” Oscar explained. “Yea I know. See I told you Gregory doesn’t think of any of us as humans.” Steve told him.

“Yea I know. Well that’s over with for now. I’m just glad things are back to normal.” Steve stood to leave. “Well I’ll catch you later. By the way we’ll meet with the lawyers and have the kids put back into your custody.” Steve assured.

“That’s right I forgot you and Jaime are still their parents.”

“Wouldn’t care to leave it that way would you Oscar?” Steve smiled.

“I don’t think so. Meet me in my lawyers in the morning.” Oscar watched Steve

“That sounds great. I’ll see you then.”

“Steve, is something wrong?” Oscar sounded worried.

“Why do you ask?” Steve wondered.

“I just wondered why you keep rubbing your arm…”

“I guess it hurts a little. I suppose I’ll have to have Rudy take a look at it tomorrow sometime.”

“No I think you better have him look at it now. You’ve been rubbing it since you got in here. Maybe something happened when Dan locked you in the freezer.”

“I don’t think so. But I’ll go see Rudy.” Steve left Oscars office and headed down to Rudy’s

“There he is” Rudy laughed. “How’s life treating on the outside?”

“Very funny Rudy.” Steve smiled. “I have a little problem.”

“Oscar called and told me. He’s kind of worried about you.” Rudy stepped over to him. “Why don’t we have a look?”

“I guess that would be alright.” Steve sat down and allowed Rudy to examine his arm.

“Here Steve. Try that out.” Rudy told him

Steve flexed his hand “That’s better. What was wrong?” Steve wondered “I mean it didn’t take you long at all.”

“Well when Dan removed the heat capsule the other day he accidently disconnected this. Here I’ll show you.”

“I think I could have done that myself.” Steve laughed.

“Yea you probably could have. Oscar said to send you right back down when I finished. He didn’t say why, just send you back.”

“I never did ask, in all the excitement. How is the baby doing?” Steve turned to Rudy before he left.

“The baby is doing just fine. The way I have it figured is sometime in December or January.”

“That’s about what I figured too. But he’s doing ok then?” Steve pressed

“No Steve, he’s not ok.” Rudy watched for Steve’s reaction, the added “He’s great Steve He’s going to be just fine, so put your mind a ease.”

“As long as you say he’s ok. Ok then. I better go see what Oscar wants.” Steve left and headed back to Oscars office. “You wanted to see me boss?”

“Yea Steve, have a seat.” Oscar pointed to the chair Steve had only vacated a few moments ago.

“What’s up?” Steve asked.

“How’s the arm?” Oscar asked after Steve sat down.

“Its just fine. What’s going on?” Steve wondered again

“Nothing major. Dan called from school; he’s on his way to work with Rudy. He wanted to make sure you were here. He wants to talk to you.”

“Yea. What does he want to talk about?” Steve asked

“He didn’t say. He just wanted to make sure you were here when he got here. So I thought I better hold you off. I figured you’d be headed out to my place as soon as you finished with Rudy.”

“Well you were right. I was getting ready to head that way.” Steve smiled. “I guess you know me pretty good.”

“Well let’s say I do now. I know you like to be with the kids.Anyway, Dan asked if you to meet him in his office.”

“I’ll go wait for him then.” Steve left Oscars office and headed down the hall to Danny’s office.

“Hi Steve”. Dan said as he entered. “Glad you’re still here.” Dan sat next to Steve.

“Hey Dan, your dad said you wanted to talk to me?” Steve turned when Dan walked in.

“I’m happy everything is back to normal I couldn’t take another day with Gregory. That’s why I turned him in.”

“We figured you were the one.” Steve smiled.

“Anyway I’m also glad to see you’re out of jail.” Danny continued

“Dan, what did you want to talk to me about?” Steve asked.

“I’m getting to that.” Dan said taking his glasses off. “Steve I don’t remember doing it. But Marc told me I put the two of you in a freezer?”

“I know you don’t.” Steve sat next to him.

“I’m sorry Steve. I have no memory of it though.” Dan told him

“I know you don’t son.” Steve moved closer to him.

“I don’t know what I was doing or thinking.” Dan continued.

“Rudy explained it to us. He said you were so upset by the way Gregory was treating your brother. And that when you went to sleep you subconscious took over.” Steve explained.

“Yea, that’s what Rudy told me.” Dan sighed. “I still have trouble with it though I thought I was helping you. I would never hurt you or Marc.” Danny told him. “I just didn’t want Marc to go to Thailand. I guess I thought I was helping.

“Yea well in a way I guess you did.” Steve agreed.

“Well I just wanted to tell you again how sorry I am.” Dan restated.

The two of them headed out of Dan’s office, “I know you are” Steve said.

“Here’s where you are.” Oscar noted when he walked through Rudy’s office. “I was wondering where everybody was.”

“Hey Dan. You ready to go home?” Oscar asked.

“Yea I guess so.” Dan muttered.

Oscar turned to Steve. “Is he ok?” He whispered.

“We had a long talk I think he’s fine.” Steve responded in the same tone.

“Well then Dan. What say we go get something to eat?” I had Jaime bring the other kids in I thought we would garb something in town.”

“Sounds great.” Dan turned to Jaime. “Are you joining us?”

“I don’t think so honey. Steve and I have plans.”

“Ok then.” Oscar said to them “We’ll see you tomorrow.” Then he turned to the boys. ”So men where should we go?” Oscar asked.

“I don’t care.” The boys answered.

“Well how about Donavan’s?” Oscar asked.

Everyone agreed that the nice family restaurant would be just fine.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

“You know.” Steve said after he and Jaime were in the car. “Why don’t we grab some take out and head home.?”

“That sounds fine by me. How are you by the way?” She turned to him.

“I’m ok I guess. I’m just glad the whole thing is over and as much as I hate to admit it” Steve turned to her and grinned. “I’m glad to see Oscar back in control.”

“Yea. Me too. The twins are scared to death of Gregory.” Jaime informed him.

“How about Marc how does he feel about Dan and what happened?” Steve pressed.

“He’s ok, I tried to explain that Dan was sleepwalking.” Jaime stated

“I still have a hard time with that but I guess the kid can’t help it.” Steve muttered.

“So what did you say to Gregory when you were with him.” Jaime asked as the hostess showed them to their table.

“I told him I wanted a lawyer. I was hoping I could hire Dan. Anyway he was pretty ticked off that I wouldn’t talk without an attorney. By the time the lawyer got there Gregory was out, Oscar was back in. And I was on my way home.”

“Well I’m glad of that. I am not I repeat NOT going to raise this baby on my own.”

“You won’t have to” Steve assured her as they picked up their food and headed back home.

Steve turned to Jaime. “Rudy says the baby is just fine. “I tell you I still worry. I’m afraid there will be something wrong with him.” Steve voiced.

“Steve. He’s going to be a carbon copy of you.” She reminded.

“Yea. I’m sure he is.” Steve sighed. Jaime had just pulled into the drive. “I just have this feeling.” Steve continued as they walked into the house.

“I have a feeling too. The baby is going to be just fine.” Jaime stated as she started dishing up their plates with the Chinese take out they had brought home.

Jaime was hungry and dug right in. Steve more or less picked in his. “What’s the matter honey?” Jaime asked.

“Aw nothing.” Steve told her. “I guess I’m not as hungry as I thought I was. To be real honest I don’t feel the greatest.”

“Maybe you should call Rudy.” Jaime suggested.

“I’m not going to bother him over a sore throat. Especially this time of night.” Steve said. “If it still hurts in the morning maybe I’ll stop by the lab then. I’m sure everything is going to be fine.”

“I’m not so sure about that. You don’t look very good.” Jaime seemed concerned.

“Jaime you’re my wife, not my mother.” Steve scolded. “I’ll be fine. I think I’ll go to bed early though. I am more than likely just coming down with a cold. That’s how they usually start with me.”

“What do you mean?” Jaime asked.

“I mean, before I catch a cold. It starts off with a sore throat, then it moves it’s way up to my head. Giving me a cold.”

“Well I hope that’s all that’s wrong.” Jaime said to herself as she watched Steve head up stairs.

Later that night Jaime rolled over and put her arm around Steve. “Oh Steve!” She cried out.

“What?” Steve was still half a sleep. “Is something wrong?”

“I’ll say. Honey you're burning up.”
