“You were born at three in the morning remember?”

“You mean my poor mother was in labor this long with me?” Steve sounded shocked

Oscar nodded. “I would assume so, either that or the baby knows how to tell time.” Oscar smiled.

“Sort of makes me regret all the bad things I did as a kid…Hey, you don’t think my son will do all the things…?”

“Oh I certainly hope so.” Oscar smiled.

At five after three Rudy walked through the door to his office. Steve, Oscar and Dan were still talking. The other kids remained sleeping.

“Steve?” Rudy called out.

Steve jumped to his feet. “Well Rudy?”

“Come on in and say hello to your son.” Rudy smiled.

Steve turned to Oscar. “You coming?”

“No Dan and I will stay here for a few minutes. We’ll be down in a bit.”

Steve followed Rudy back down the hall to the room Rudy had moved Jaime too after the delivery,

“Jaime held the tiny bundle in her arms. “Well dad, we pulled it off. He’s perfect.” She cooed

Steve reached over and took the baby. “Come here little fellow.” Steve held on tight to his son. “I can’t believe he’s finally here.” He whispered. “And you’re right, he’s perfect. I have had all sorts nightmares.”

“I know you have.” Jaime yawned.

“I hate to break up the family get together, but they both need their rest Steve.” Rudy interrupted.

“Yea I suppose you’re right. So do I.” Steve agreed.

“Is he ready to meet his public.” Oscar asked quietly as he and Dan stepped in to Jaime’s room

“For just a second. Are all the kids here?” Rudy sounded concerned.

“No. Just Dan. I just left the others to sleep. They can see him in the morning.”

Dan stepped in. He looked down at the bundle Steve was holding. “Well it worked. Can I hold him?”

“Sure Dan. Sit down over there.” Rudy pointed to the couch in the corner of the room. He had moved it there just in case the kids wanted to hold the baby. He gently took the baby from Steve and laid him on Dan’s lap. “Just let the pillows support his head Dan.” Rudy cautioned.

“Ok Rudy.” Dan continued to stare in amazement at the miracle he held in his hands. A miracle he himself had been part of.

Rudy turned to Jaime and Steve. “Why I still have all of you here, I have to write out the birth certificate what’s the baby’s name?”

“James Daniel.” Jaime and Steve spoke together.

Dan thought of a moment. “Gee, thanks you two.”

“Well Dan. If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t have a baby.” Steve reminded.

“Here Dan, Let me see him.” Oscar took the baby from him. “Hey Steve, You were a pretty good looking baby, what happened?” Oscar laughed.

“I don’t know. I just got better looking.” Steve joined him laughing ruining the rest of Oscar’s joke.

“Well.” Rudy interrupted. “Jaime really needs here sleep. I’m afraid you’re all going to have to leave. You can come back in the morning.”

“Ok Rudy. I’ll be here later on. But before I leave I have a question.” Steve said.

“Yea Steve what’s that?” Rudy wondered.

“The baby’s eyes are brown…”

“Yea so?” Rudy wondered

“Mine are blue, if he’s my clone…”

“Steve, your eyes were brown too. It’s in your record. You had brown eyes and dark, really dark brown hair. It all fell out when you were six days old and grew in the color it is now.”

“So James will lose all of this thick wonderful hair.” Jaime sounded shocked.

“More than likely yea.” Rudy laughed. “Now you two get some sleep.” He ordered.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

The next day Rudy let Jaime and the baby go home from the hospital.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to take Marc just till you get settled?”

“No Oscar, we’ll be fine.” Steve thought for a moment. “That is unless you want him to spend a few days with you? But he has settled in quite well.”

“Well ok then.” Oscar agreed. “I suppose I should have done this a long time ago. I didn’t see too much of Marc last night, but he does seem happier. “

“He is Oscar.” Steve replied. “I think it was a long time in coming.”

“You’re right. Well I’ll see you in a couple of days for New Years.”

“Yea Jaime and I will have New Years Day at our house.”

“Sounds good. We’ll play New Year’s Eve by ear. If you and Jaime don’t want to take the baby out…”

“We’ll see” Steve helped Jaime and the baby out to the car.

Oscar waved good-bye to the four of them.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

A few days later Oscar and the kids joined Steve, Jaime, Marc and baby James at their house for New Years Day.

"Hey Oscar." Steve greeted at the door. "Happy 1977!"

"Yea to you too Steve." Oscar stepped into the front hall followed by Dan, Matt and Joey.

Matt and Marc were happy to see one another and quickly ran off to play and catch up.

By mid afternoon James was screaming. Joey stood over him. “What’s wrong with him?”

“Nothing son.” Steve picked up his screaming son. “I just have to change him.”

“Don’t do that!” Joey cried. “I like him just the way he is.”

Everyone laughed at the innocent joke.

“I mean he needs a clean diaper.” Steve corrected himself.

“Oh I think you better, He smells bad.” Joey held his nose.

Steve carried James into the nursery. “Now little guy.” He laid him down on the changing table. “Let Daddy get you nice and clean.” Steve removed the diaper but forgot to duck. “Just don’t do that to your mother, huh.”

Steve quickly pinned the boy into a clean diaper and took him back downstairs. He handed him to Jaime. “I think he’s hungry, you hold him, I’ll get his bottle.”

“Bottle?” Rudy questioned. “I thought Jaime was going to nurse him.”

“Well I wanted to, but Steve wanted in on it to, so we decided to bottle feed him.”

Steve returned with the bottle. “Here I’ll do it.”

“He’s great.” Jaime exclaimed. “He gets up for the three o’clock feeding.”

“I don’t mind.” Steve smiled. “He’s such a good baby. By the way where are your kids Oscar?” Steve asked

“They went up to Marc’s room to play. By the way how is he getting along?”

“Just great Oscar he couldn’t be happier. How are you doing?” Steve wondered.

“We’re ok I guess. Just so long as Marc is finally happy…” The doorbell rang interrupting anything else he might have said.

Steve stood to answer the door. “I wonder who that could be?’ He said as he walked across the living room.

Steve and Jaime both opened the door. “Yes?” They spoke together.

“Is Oscar Goldman here?” He asked.

“As a matter of fact yes.” Jaime went back into the living room “Oscar someone is at the door for you.”

“Who is it?” Oscar asked.

“I have no idea.” Jaime shrugged.

Oscar joined Steve and Jaime at the door. “Yes, can I help? …Oh my go-. Tom!” Oscar gasped.

“That’s right. Aren’t you going to invite me in Oscar?” Tom responded.

“Its just that I thought you were…”

“Dead?” Tom completed the statement. “Not quite.”

“Oscar who is this?” Steve asked as the strange man stepped into his front hall.

“Steve, Jaime. This is Tom. Tom Jenkins. He’s….”

“The father of Dan, Marc, Matt and Joey. I’ve come to reclaim my sons…”

“You can’t be serious?” Oscar replied.

“I’m very serious. I’ll take them with me now.” Tom shouted.

Steve turned to Jaime and whispered. “Go up stairs take the kids out through the service entrance”

Jaime gave a nod. “Well I better get James down for his nap, I’ll be right back.” She headed up the steps.

“What’s going on Jaime?” Marc wondered.

“Nothing for you kids to worry about.” She lied. “I do need you to come with me though. Let’s go this way.”

She led the children down the back steps and out the back door and into the car. “I’m going to take you to Russ’ house.” She picked up Steve’s car phone and dialed Russ. “I’ll explain everything later. I just need to drop the kids off.”

“I understand. We’ll be waiting.” Russ assured.

After dropping the kids off, Jaime slipped back in the house and up the stairs; she then came down the steps into the living room “I didn’t think he would ever go to sleep.” Jaime sat on the couch.

“I want my sons!” Tom screeched.

“It’s not that simple Tom.” Oscar tried to explain. “I adopted the boys over a year ago. I need to talk to my lawyer.”

“Are they here?” Tom stormed through the house.

Steve grabbed him. “Unless you have a search warrant I suggest you leave my home!”

“I’ll be at your house first thing in the morning Oscar. I expect my son’s to be packed and ready to go.” Tom stormed out of the door.

“What am I going to do Steve?” Oscar plopped on the couch next to Jaime.

“I don’t know. Oscar if he’s…”

“He can’t be. Steve Tom and Julie were killed over a year ago in a plane crash. Why didn’t he make his move before this?”

“I don’t know.” Steve sat in the chair across from Jaime and Oscar Rudy sat next to him.

Oscar turned to Jaime. “Where are the kids?”

“I took them to Russ’ Jaime assured. “They’re fine. I told Russ we would explain everything later.”

“Do they know?” Concern rose in his voice.

“I don’t think so.” Jaime told him.

“I don’t want them to know. Until I’m sure…”

“Then what Oscar?” Steve wondered. “What happens if he is Tom, and he wasn’t killed?”

“I don’t know Steve, I just don’t know.” Oscar’s voice trailed off.

“What if the plane crash was staged? Didn’t Dan tell us that Tom was planning on divorcing Julie and taking the kids?”

“You could have something there. Jaime.” Oscar turned toward her. “You could have something. I’m going to pick the kids up. I’ll be back in a bit. I’ll drop Marc off.”

“Ok we’ll be waiting.” Steve assured. “We sure enjoy having him here.” He added.

“I know it’s hard on all of us, but Marc seems happier?” Oscar noted.

“He does seem more at ease. I wish we would have done this from the beginning.” Steve added.

“I’m going to get the kids. I’ll be right back.” Oscar left. And Jaime went up to take care of the baby.

Steve followed her up stairs. “How is the little guy?”

“I think he slept through most of the excitement. That’s a relief.” Jaime said as she lifted James out of his crib.

“Here I’ll take him.” Steve took their son. ‘I suppose he’s hungry again?”

“That would be my guess.” Jaime smiled. “Come on I’ll fix his bottle.

Steve followed her downstairs and into the kitchen. They sat at the table. “You know Steve.” Jaime started “I don’t think I have fed him but once since we brought him home.”

“I suppose we could take turns.” Steve suggested. “I just want to be with him all the time.”

“Well so do I.” Jaime smiled.

“Ok you can feed him the next time.” Steve put James over his shoulder and gently tapped him. He let out with a gigantic burp. “That’s my boy!” He exclaimed.

“Like father like son.” Jaime teased.

“More so in this case.” Steve handed the baby to her. “I’ll let you do the next part this time.”

“Oh well thank you kindly sir.” Then she turned serious. “Steve. “What is Oscar going to do?”

“I don’t know Jaime. I just don’t know.” Steve sighed.

“We can’t let him take the kids.” Jaime continued.

“I know. Look Oscar has complete custody of them.” Steve reminded. “I don’t think we have to worry about that.”

“I hope not.” Jaime finished changing their son, then laid him back down in his crib.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

After picking up the kids from Russ. Oscar headed back to Steve and Jaime’s to drop Marc off.

“Do you like living with Steve and Jaime Marc?” Oscar asked.

“Yes I do. Thanks dad.” Marc replied.

“Yea? Well that’s good.” Oscar turned toward the back. Joey was looking out the window and the twins started chattering away. He turned to Dan.

“I suppose you want to know what’s going on?”

Dan nodded. “Who came to the house dad?”

This time they both looked to make sure the younger kids were occupied. “Dan your father stopped by.”

“That’s not possible.” Dan sounded shocked. “Dad that’s not possible.”

“He says he wasn’t killed in the plane crash.” Oscar spoke softly.

“I don’t believe it. Wait.” Dan to whispered. They didn’t want the younger kids to over hear. After thinking for several minutes Dan Snapped his fingers. “I wonder if it was uncle Bob?”

“Who’s Bob?” Oscar asked.

“Dad’s twin brother?” Dan spoke softly.

“I didn’t know your father had a twin.” Oscar stared at Dan.

“Neither did I until about a month or before mom and dad were killed. He’s been in prison…”

“Prison? For what?”

“Murder.” Dan explained

“What? Who did he kill?” Oscar wanted answers and he wanted them now.

“His family. I heard dad and mom arguing one night.”

They pulled up in front of Steve’s house. “You younger boys go upstairs for a bit. Dad has some things he needs to discuss with Steve and Jaime.”

After the kids were settled Oscar led Steve and Jaime to the kitchen. “I have something to tell you. I don’t want the other kids to hear. It appears Marc and Matt aren’t the only twins in the family. According to Dan. Tom had a twin. That’s who was here…” Oscar proceeded to tell them what Dan had said.

“Oscar we can’t let him near the kids…” Steve surmised.

“There is something else.” Dan started. “If he just got out of prison he could be in violation of his parole.”

“What prison was he in Dan?” Oscar headed for the phone

“Rikers Island.” Dan told him.

Oscar placed the call. “Yes Warden, thank you very much.” Oscar hung up. “He was released day before yesterday, and Dan is right. He was not allowed to leave NY City, much less New York State.”

“If he shows up again, and he will.” Steve began. “We can have him arrested.”

“Let’s hope he shows up to us, and doesn’t just take the kids.” Oscar jumped in.

“Maybe they should know. That way they won’t go with him.” Jaime suggested.

“I suppose you’re right.” He called the kids downstairs and explained the whole thing to them. “So if he were to approach you, run away from him.” Oscar finished.

“We will dad don’t worry.” The twins stated.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

That evening Oscar, Dan, Matt and Joey headed home. “You behave yourself Marc.”

“I will dad. Hey Matt have fun in school tomorrow.”

“I will I’m looking forward to it.”

Oscar turned to Jaime. “You’re still going to tutor Marc?”

“Yes I think it’s best.” She responded

“Yea me to.” Oscar agreed.

Later that night Jaime woke up to a strange sound. “Steve wake up. I heard something. It sounded like it came from the baby’s room!”

“You stay here. I’ll go check it out.”

Steve tiptoed across the hall. He slowly opened the door to the nursery. There stood Tom/Bob Jenkins with James in his arms.

“You put him down. NOW!” Steve cried.

The man drew a shotgun and aimed it at Steve’s head. “I’ll give you your son as soon as you give me mine.” He seethed.

“Put the baby and the gun down. Bob!” Steve coaxed. He didn’t want to frighten or anger the man, After all he held the baby in his arms.

“Never!” He continued to hold the gun on Steve. “One more move and I’ll blow you away.

Fearing for the baby Steve stepped forward. The man fired…

As the bullet sailed across the room Steve stepped out of the way. The bullet landed in the wall just behind him.

Hearing the strange voice as well as the gun shot Jaime and Marc darted into the room. Bob still held James in his arms. He was about to fire again when Marc picked up a rattle and hurled it at the hand holding the gun.

The gun dropped to the floor. Jaime rushed the man and grabbed her son out of his arms. “Marc call the police and then your father.” Jaime ordered.

Seeing his son was safe Steve lunged at the man still standing by the crib. He grabbed his wrist and squeezed till the man’s face drained of blood and he fell unconscious on the floor.

“You didn’t kill him did you?” Jaime wondered.

“No, but at least we won’t have any trouble out of him till Oscar and the police arrive.” Steve’s voice was still a bit shaky.

Oscar arrived shortly after the police. He stepped up the commissioner who had handled the case personally when he heard who was involved.

“Commissioner Daily? This man is Bob Jenkins. He is in parole violation. He was released from Rikers Island only last week. He is not to leave the state of NY.”

“Looks like you get to be a guest of New York City again.” The commissioner stated. “Then you get to come on down here and face charges on attempted kidnapping, as well as attempted murder.” They led Bob off to the squad car waiting just outside.

“Are you three all right?” Oscar asked turning to the three of them sitting together on the couch.

“Yea we’ll be fine. I just hope he stays in prison.” Jaime sounded angry. More than she sounded scared.

“Don’t worry, he’ll be gone for sometime. He has the rest of his sentence to serve out in NY, then the charges down here. He’ll come straight here when his time in NY is finished.”

“Well that’s good news.” Steve and Jaime spoke together.

They watched out the window as the squad car pulled away with Bob Jenkins in the back seat.

‘Good riddens.” Marc muttered. “I’m going back to bed.”

“That sounds good. I think we all better.” Jaime suggested.

“I’ll see the two of you in the morning. I have to get back to the other kids. I had Rudy watch them for a bit.” Before he left he turned back to Steve and Jaime who were standing at the bottom of the stairs. “You know. I’m sure Millie put him up to this.”

“Yea well I don’t think she’s going to be any trouble. Her ace in the hole is gone.” Steve reminded.

“Yea I suppose you’re right. You get a good night’s sleep. I’ll see you later.”

The next day Oscar had to get back into a new routine. He dropped Matt and Joey off at Bethesda Elementary then took Dan to school. “I’ll see you later son.”

“Yea I’ll be working with Rudy tonight.” Dan said as he got out of the car.

“I’ll see you then son.” Oscar headed for the office.

At Steve and Jaime’s house, Jaime was getting used to the idea of having only one pupil. Well for the time being anyway. She planned on home schooling her own son as well.

Before she started the lessons for the day they all gathered at the kitchen table.

“Steve, could I ask you something?” Marc’s voice was soft.

“Sure Marc what ever you want?” Steve turned to him He was afraid Marc wanted to go back to Oscar’s house, and he didn’t know if he was ready for that one.

“Well I was wondering if it would be all right for me to call you dad? I know Uncle Oscar is my father, I don’t want that to change, but since I live here, I thought it would be easier…”

“Marc, I would love for you to call me dad, if that’s what you want. I’ll ask your father if he has a problem with it.”

“Thanks Steve…I mean dad.” Marc smiled.

“I think I like the sounds of that.” Steve smiled back.

After breakfast Jaime headed into the dining room with Marc. “I suppose we better get to work.”

“I’ll see you later.” Steve called as he headed out the door. “I’m going over to Oscar’s office for a bit. I want to make sure that our friend made it back to NY last night. And I’ll see what he thinks of your idea Marc.”

“I agree with that one.” Jaime got down to her lessons with Marc, and Steve headed out the door.

“Steve!” Oscar called when he stepped in. “I was just trying to call you. Bob Jenkins was checked into Rikers at 3:05 this morning. I just thought you would like to know.”

“That’s why I’m here. I wanted in confirmed that he won’t come after my family tonight.”

‘He won’t.” Oscar assured.

“Well that’s good. Look another reason I stopped by. Marc asked this morning if he could call me dad. He thought it would be easier.”

“I don’t know…”

“Oscar Marc told us he knows you’re still his father, he doesn’t want that to change.” Steve offered.

“Well if he’s more comfortable that way. I’ve noticed in the past week or so, he’s a lot more comfortable with everything.”

“Yea. How does Matt like public school?” Steve wondered and then remembered. “Well I suppose you’ll find out tonight.”

“He was pretty happy when I left, he and Teddy are in the same room.” Oscar proceeded to read a file that was on his desk.

“I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not.” Steve laughed. “That Teddy can be quite the kid.”

“Yea I know, but he and Matt seem to get along pretty well. And now that Matt doesn’t have Marc…”

How is he getting along?” Steve wondered.

“We’re still getting used to the fact.” Oscar laid the file aside for a moment.

They were still talking when Rudy. Stepped in.

“Oscar. I need to talk to you for a moment.” He sat next to Steve.

“Yea Rudy what is it?” Oscar asked.

“Well. It’s like this Oscar. I’ve been giving this some thought now for quite some time. You know when I first moved in with you it was only temporary?”

“I thought that changed after you had your own apartment.” Oscar reasoned.

“Yea, well I’ve decided it’s time to move on.” Rudy replied. “The only reason I stayed on was because of Marc, now he lives with Steve and Jaime…”

”I get the point. You have a place in mind?” Oscar wondered.

”As a matter of fact yes. I am planning on buying a house that has been in…or maybe I should say had been in my family for years…”

“Had been?” Oscar wondered.

“Yes. My grandmother owned the house, as well as her grandmother. Anyway, my grandmother passed away about ten years ago, and the house was sold as part of the estate. At the time I wasn’t in the market for a house.”

“I understand. Did it just come on the market?” Oscar wondered.

“Yes. I put a bid on it and the owners accepted. I take possession in about a week.”

“Well that’s great Rudy. I’m happy for you, but we’re going to miss you.” Oscar sighed. “Especially Dan.”

“Yea, well the house is only a few blocks from Steve and Jaime.” Rudy informed him.

“Well if this is what you want.” Oscar looked up at him.

“Yea it’s what I want. I’ll talk to you more about it tonight. I just don’t know how I’ll tell the kids.”

“Don’t worry, I think they’ll understand.” Oscar seemed preoccupied. Just how was he going to tell the kids?

That night they explained everything to the kids, in spite of how worried Oscar was they seemed to take it pretty well.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

A week later they all helped Rudy move into his new house. “This is great!” Rudy exclaimed. “I used to come here to visit my grandparents when I was just a kid.”

“We’re happy for you Rudy.” Steve said.

“Thanks Steve.” Rudy replied. “How’s James doing?”

Like you said. Jaime just about cried the other morning when all of his hair fell out, and his eyes are getting lighter everyday.”

“I’m sure they will be blue before the month is out.” Rudy assured.

“At first I was afraid Dan had cloned himself.” Steve was serious.

“Yea? Well maybe next time. It would be rather interesting to see if he would be as smart as Dan.” Rudy speculated.

“Yea it would be interesting.” Steve humored him. “Are you all set then?”

“Yea, go on home to your family. I’ll see you later.”

Steve walked into the house. Jaime sat in the living room feeding the baby. “Where’s Marc?” Steve asked looking around for his second ‘son’

“He’s in his room. I told him he has to read at least 30 minutes a day. Dinner will be in just a few moments.” She stroked James’ head. “I think his hair is growing back.”

Steve walked over to a bookshelf and grabbed one of his baby albums. He started looking at pictures and comparing the two.

“Look at this Jaime. I was exactly the same age here.” Steve showed her the picture

“He has brown fuzz on top of his head just like you.” Jaime exclaimed.

“I don’t know if I like this clone idea or not.” Steve smiled.

“Well I think he’s perfect, just like his father.” She smiled back.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

They were just getting ready to sit down to dinner when the doorbell rang. Jaime and Steve both answered it.

“Oscar? What brings you here?” Steve asked.

“I have some news about an old advisory of yours. Do you remember a man by the name of Joseph Wrona?”

“Yea. He was that counterfeiter I went after a few years ago.” Steve remembered.

“I just wanted to let you know I just received word he died in prison three days ago.” Oscar informed him

“Well that’s good. He’s one I won’t have to worry about.”

“Just wanted you to know.”

“Thanks Oscar.” Steve walked him to his car.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Late that night Steve and Jaime woke to find a strange young man, young man, he was just a kid standing in their bedroom.

“I’m Jared Wrona. Joseph Wrona was my father.” He held a gun to Steve. “And you killed him!” He waved the gun around. “I just came to repay you…”

Steve got out of bed. “Now just take it easy.” Steve tried to reason.

“I won’t take it easy!” Jared continued to scream.

“Look I’m sorry your father died.” Even though he had broken into his home and posed an obvious threat to his family, Steve couldn’t help but feel sorry for the young boy.

“But it’s not Steve’s fault.” Jaime jumped in.

“Yes it is!” The boy cried. “My father died in prison. He got sick and died. If he hadn’t been in prison…”

“Your father was in prison for falsely duplicating money.” Steve reminded.

“You didn’t have to send him to prison!” Tears ran down the boys face.

Jaime stood and walked over to him. “Look I know you’re hurting because your father died, but it’s not our fault.”

“Yes it is!!” the gun wielding Jared shrieked.

“Listen Jared.” She tried to keep his attention diverted while Steve made his way closer to him. “We understand why you’re so upset, but why not put that down. You really don’t want to hurt anybody.”

“Yes I do!!” He didn’t see Steve come up behind him. He grabbed the hand he held the gun in and forced it out of his hand.

“Now why don’t we sit down and have a nice chat.” Steve continued to hold onto the boy’s wrist.

“Jaime maybe you better call Oscar.” Steve pointed to the phone.

“He’s on his way.” Marc spoke as he walked in the door. “I heard the whole thing. Dad should be here in just a second.

Within minutes Oscar and Russ arrived. “We seem to be making quite the habit of this.” Oscar teased as Russ led the boy away.

“Oscar, I don’t know if I want to press charges or not. I think he’s just a confused kid stricken with grief.

“What do you suggest we do?” Oscar wondered.

“Get him counseling or something.” Jaime suggested.

“Well we’ll give it a try. Maybe you’re right.” Oscar joined Russ outside “Steve won’t press charges. Yet.” He added “But we can’t let him roam the streets. Jaime suggests counseling.”

“Maybe a hospital then?” Russ wondered

“Good idea. I don’t want him breaking into Steve’s home again. He has not only his own family to protect, but my son is there too.”

Russ nodded. “I’ll take care of it.”

Back in the house everyone once again headed for bed. Steve after he checked on his son to make sure the intruder hadn’t done him harm first.

James was fine; he had slept through the whole thing.

The next morning everyone at Steve’s house was getting used to the new routine. They all sat at breakfast together, even though James wasn’t big enough to sit at the table he was there too.

After breakfast Jaime turned to Marc. “Well I suppose we better get started.” She turned to Steve. “What are you going to do today?”

“I don’t know. I thought I would take my son for a little ride. I don’t know where we’ll end up.”

Smiling Jaime packed several bottles and a change of clothes for her son. “Don’t be gone to long.”

“I thought we’d be gone while you worked with Marc.” Steve explained.

“It would be nice to work without the baby underfoot.” She noted. “You two have a good time.”

Steve took James out to the car and hooked him into his car seat. “Wonderful invention.” Steve spoke to himself. “I like the idea.”

He headed out of the driveway and down the street.

“Well. Where should we go son?” Steve peeked into the review mirror at his son. “How bout the space museum. We can see the big airplanes.”

In his car seat James squealed with delight.

“Good, then the space museum it is. I’ll call mommy and tell her where we are going.” Steve reached for the car phone.

“Jaime. I just wanted to let you know that James and I are going to spend the day at the space museum.”

“Ok then. I’ll see you later.” Smiling Jaime hung up the phone.

James and his father arrived at the space museum. Steve took the stroller out of the car strapped James into it and headed into the museum.

Midway looking at the big planes James’ squeals turned into screams.

“What’s the matter son?” Steve asked trying to soothe the boy.

Steve tried feeding him, that didn’t work. Nothing worked. Out of frustration Steve thought it best to take the boy to Rudy.

Rudy quickly examined him, then read the records from when Steve was a baby. “This is incredible.” Rudy almost shouted. “You were exactly the same age when you had your first ear infection. I mean I’m talking down to the last day!”

“That’s what’s wrong with him?” Steve sounded relieved.

“Yep. I’ll start him on medicine. I suggest you take him right home.” Rudy ordered. “I’ll call Jaime and tell her you’re on your way.”

“Thanks Rudy.” He took the medicine from the DR. “Any more surprises I should know about?”

“I’ll let you know as we go on.” Rudy smiled. “This is very interesting. I’m anxious to see how the rest of this is going to play out.”

“Yea me too.” Steve bundled his baby boy up and carried him out to the car.

Jaime was waiting when they walked in. “Rudy called. He told me the baby is sick.”

“Yea I guess I had quite a few when I was a baby. I out grew them though I have no doubt James will too.” Steve’s face turned sad. “He would have to get sick on our first outing just the two of us.”

“He’ll be fine. Don’t worry.” Jaime stated.. "And there will be plenty of outings, just the two of you." She assured.

“Yea I suppose your right.” Steve held his son closer. “At least his hair is growing back.” Steve noted as he continued to cradle his son.

“Yea. It looks just like yours.” Jaime smiled.

“So when are you gong to be ready for another one?” Steve looked up at her.

“Not for a while, and besides, like I told Rudy. I refuse to give birth to myself…”

“You’ll change your mind. I would love a girl just like you to raise.”
