DOG TRAINING

Head Start Puppy Program

Our puppy ‘’head start’’ program is second to none. From 14 to 18 weeks of age we will have your pup hunting in front of the gun, flushing, retrieving live shot flyers, retrieving in the water through decoys, and mastering some basic obedience skills.

Puppies having their first swim on a warm summer day at just six weeks old. These pups have been retrieving live birds since five weeks of age.

Caution! Gun shyness is a man made fault. A proper gun introduction is crucial. Our gun introduction is a common sense technique and easily understood by our pups. Don’t let your story become a nightmare!

Retriever Training

We offer two general development focuses for our programs. Our Hunt Test Program prepares your retriever for participation in Junior, Senior, and Master level AKC Licensed Hunt Tests. We build off a solid foundation of obedience, force fetch, and marking to prepare your dog for qualification in Junior Hunt Tests. Then, we introduce multiple marks, blind retrieves and handling to prepare for Senior level stakes. Finally, advanced training concepts are drilled in preparation for Senior and Master stakes. Our Gundog Program uses the same solid foundation as our hunt test program, however, there is less focus on adhering to competition specific skills, such as line manners, and more of a focus on practical application of retriever skills during an actual hunt in the field.

Solid Foundations

All our training builds upon a solid off-leash obedience program. The key to success with any dog is control and consistency. When a relationship of respect exists between dog and handler, both will have clear expectations of what is expected in terms of performance.

Owner Participation

At HighPoint Labradors, you can choose to be as involved, or uninvolved, in your dog’s retriever training program as you like. Some of our clients prefer to come out and train with us, learning to handle their dog, preparing himself or herself to handle the dog in a trial or hunting situation. Still, other clients take a more “hands-off” approach and simply come out every now and then to observe their dog in training, or come out on occasion to watch their dog participate in a trial.

Hunt Test Programs

Our Hunt Test programs are designed to prepare your dog for competition in AKC Licensed Hunt Tests at all levels. We set our standards high and structure our training programs to meet each dog’s individual needs. Our training programs provide a balance of yard work drills, training on concepts, and testing circumstances. We focus on consistency and performance.
