"The World's Top Goal Scorer 2002"

Ruud Van Nistelrooy is the World Goalgetter for 2002!

"The World's Top Goal Scorer" is determined annually by the IFFHS. From 1st January to 31st December the international goals of the full internationals (category "A"), FIFA selection matches and Olympic final rounds as well as of inter-continental club competitions are taken into consideration. Following Jean-Pierre Papin (1991), Hristo Stoichkov (1994), Jürgen Klinsmann (1995) and Raúl González Blanco (1999), Ruud Van Nistelrooy now becomes the 5th European winner. The performance of the 26-year-old Dutchman is all the more remarkable, because he had no opportunity, to improve his goal tally at the World Cup finals and had also been out through injury. He scored 13 goals in the European Champions League and one in a full international.

After Van Nistelrooy come 6 top international stars, who all took part in the World Cup finals. The 24-year-old Miroslav Klose came 2nd, having scored a goal in a FIFA selection match in Madrid, and where the same number of goals have been scored, the places in the ranking are determined by the greater number of selection goals. Among the "Top 20" are 13 Europeans (more than ever before), 6 South Americans and an African (Ahmed Belal). The best-placed of the Asians, who have already won this world trophy four times, is the Indonesian Bambang Pamunkas, those of Oceania Joris Pibke (New Caledonia) and from the CONCACAF area the Mexican José Antonio Noriega. Among the "Top 20" are three Brazilians as well as two Dutchmen, Germans, Spaniards and Uruguayans.
