A SORT OF PORTRAIT SKRIBBLE TUTORIAL THINGY
Wot you have all bin waitin for ;^)
Part 9 ~ Upper Body Light and Shadow

Putting down skin tone on the upper body uses the same process as for the face. Lay down a light layer of graphite with the H, blend with the stump and add shadows and highlights. Because we are drawing on relatively larger areas we can add extra graphite with the pencil directly to the skribble and then blend, rather than picking up the graphite from a seperate piece of paper.

9. FINISHING OFF

Not long to go now and you can go back to watching the TV......... anythings gotta be better than having to read through all this drivel.........

9.1     First lay down the graphite with the lightest strokes possible from the H grade. Keep the strokes evenly spaced and at a constant pressure ~ practice this technique, it is the basis of everything that I draw. You are looking to put the minimum amount of graphite onto the paper.

9.2     As with the face, use a clean blending stump to buff the graphite into a smooth even tone over the entire neck/chest/exposed skin area. Use even strokes and don't be too heavy with the pressure. Try not to obliterate your guides for the shadows.

9.3     Put down additional graphite with the HB pencil to accentuate the neck and upper body anatomy. Sinews, tendons, bony structures, musculature and fatty tissue are all enclosed within the skin and all you have is a simple graphite stick to represent all this magic ;^)

9.4     I'm more or less happy with the tonal values which represent shadow and highlights at this stage and she is ready for more work with the stump.

9.5     Loose all the pencil strokes by blending them together. Work from lighter areas into darker areas to start with. On an area this size you may need to clean your stump quite often. Other methods of blending are to use tissue paper over the finger, small wads of fabric or anything that works for you. I have even been known to use a sleeve cuff!!! LOL

9.6     As always, tone/graphite can be removed with the eraser to give highlights.......

9.7     .........to be stroked over with the stump afterwards to give smooth transitions from light to dark.

9.8     A final clean up with the eraser gets rid of any remains of guide lines at the edges of the skribble along with marks left by my grubby paws ;^)
