For Matthew
Driving home dark, and I'm thinking of you again
Woke from a dream last week and nothing's the same since then
I write by one candle in a haze of 'remember when?'
Can't lose the longing for a once known and so true friend
I will visit the scenes long ago when our time was young
Eyes opened wide by a light brighter than the sun
Can't help recalling the fast fading come undone
No-one said 'If you close your eyes, you'll open them to find him
gone...'
Gone to another
So many times over
True of us both at one or another
Mine was the first, but yours seems to last
I cannot bring you to the future from the past
Calling you now, in the way that you used to hear
Never out loud, seems I always found that you were near
Silence fills the air now, as I miss the days that you were here
Days, into months, into cold empty many years
Gone to another
So many times over
True of us both, at one or another
Mine was the first, but yours seems to last
I cannot bring you to the future form the past.
Remember all the words we said, we could, we should, we never would
And how our dreams combined to write a fairy tale
Remember, if you will, the promises we made to never leave, never fail,
never ever ever change...
Know that my promise still stands strong as carven stone
While I walk this world, you need never feel that you're alone
The light burning here still pales the moon and shames the sun
Distance cannot separate us into two from being one.
