"Charmed" is the saga of three sisters: Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell. The story begins when one of the sisters, Phoebe, comes back to the Halliwell House after the death of their grand-mother. Phoebe is a "free spirit", living one day at a time and appears irresponsible to the oldest sister, Prue.

While the sisters are getting to know one another again, they happen to play with a Spirit Board. The message they receive keeps directing them to the attic. In the attic lays an ancient, antique green covered book that has been resting at the bottom of a trunk in a thick pile of dust. Phoebe reaches in, takes out the book, 'The Book of Shadows. She opens the front cover to see a centuries old woodcarving of coven of three women gathered around a circle, casting spells. And, on the first page an elaborately scrolled incantation. "Hear now the words of the witches. The secrets we hid in the night. The oldest of spells are invoked here. The great gift of magic is sought" The mysterious "Book of Shadows" describes three sisters who possess magical powers.

The sisters are said to have the powers of "seeing the future, stopping time, and moving things with the mind". The Halliwell sisters discover, that the "Book of Shadows" is more than just an antique publication in their attic. When siblings Prue, Piper and Phoebe begin to learn more about the book, their heritage and the unique powers that have been bestowed upon them, they must set aside their differences in order to stand together, knowing that they only have themselves to rely upon.

Prue, being the oldest sister attempts to persuade her sisters that their powers should not be used. This creates a lot of friction but as time goes on, their powers attract many evil beings who are out to kill the Charmed Ones and steal their powers. More and more it becomes clear that they must use their powers to defend themselves and they are the strongest when they use their powers together; therefore "The Power of Three".

"Charmed" explores the relationship between three different sisters complicated by the discovery of supernatural powers that each possesses and consequences they share by keeping this family secret away from any outsiders as they find their respective ways in the world.
