Please listen for an interview/performance promoting "An Acoustic Evening" featuring Sarah and her boys on Saskatoon's Community Radio Station CFCR 90.5 FM on Thursday, October 19 at 8:30 a.m.
a note from sarah: An Acoustic Evening went almost as well as I possibly could've hoped. The variety of talent and personality onstage was reflected in our large and appreciative audience. After an unavoidable delay in soundcheck, the doors finally opened. The Oldrey Sisters (that's the name that Farideh and Hanna go by these days) delighted the early crowd with pretty harmonies and quick humour (and a bass player filled with air). The newest addition to the list entitled "Sarah's Favourite Saskatoon Performers", Scott Patrick, was up next to share his sparkling guitar and smooth vocals and was joined on vocals and djembe by Mel Siebert. James Earl Hails played both new material and songs from back when his name was still Jay (Trent and I enjoyed these especially), with Mike Card on *electric* guitar (oops!). Chris Martin switched back and forth between guitar and piano performing his original songs, telling stories of their inspiration between gulps of orange juice straight from the carton. Then Chris and I did some Emm Gryner piano songs together. This was especially nice since we haven't had a chance to do that since probably my release party. Finally, my boys and I took the stage. By this time it was already quite late and many people had reasons to leave. (Earlier, Jay...I mean, James said "I want to thank everyone who came, except the people that left.") Those committed enough to the experience who managed to stay til the end received the very special reward of brand new sarahsongs. And when I say brand new I mean that the song we closed with was written two days before the show and that Jimmy and Shaughn played it four times at Thursday's rehearsal. Then of course there was impromtu poetry readings from my dear sister, Amy.
My reasons for doing this show: I went to Summersault this year and hated the entire show. I just went to see the Smashing Pumpkins and ended up having to wait through the entire massive destructive terrible thing. It was at that point that I decided that there was not nearly enough acoustic music happening in this town. And that's part of the reason for this show. So thanks to everyone who came for supporting independent local acoustic songwriters. The other purposes for this show were entirely selfish reasons on my part. I am leaving for a two-month trip to Australia on November 1. This show acted not only as a final fundraiser for that trip, but also as an excuse to get nearly all of my favourite people in this city into one room before I left. So if you're reading this as someone who supported this show and my trip either as an audience member, a volunteer, or a performer, please know that I have an immense wealth of gratitude for you all.

sarah says:
THE 3RD ANNUAL ACOUSTIC EVENING thanks to everyone who attended. your support of local acoustic music is much appreciated. everyone had longer than expected sets due to the disappearance of one of our acts and several encores and requests from the audience. riki had a pesky frog in her throat, but didn't want to let it stop her from playing a few of her emotional originals (and an ani tune) with shaughn improving on percussion. luke showed up just in time to replace our vanished second act. i especially like it when he plays really sad/angry songs or ones that were originally electric band songs. aaron made a special surprise appearance for a few songs which several members of our audience were very pleased about. chris made everyone cry with sad songs on both guitar and piano and my mom even convinced he, aaron and i to play "flying" together (completely winging it, since we haven't played it together in over a year, but we did well considering). my boys and i sounded super, if i do say so myself. we played some new stuff that no one has ever really heard before. i am reinspired. jody thinks this should give aaron and i a kick in the ass to start playing together again regularly. i was very happy to finally hear the drum group, repercussion, in a proper setting (instead of through the walls of my video store as they rehearse in the yoga studio). they've really come together to be a tight and dance-inducing group. i was quite happy with the whole event. we have a few new fans and friends now. and hopefully we will see everyone at the video store soon.
