5:40pm

Having just taken off, Aaron enjoying his complimentary (non-vegetarian) snack, and relaxing in our comfortable plane seats, I thought it would be a good time to write the first entry in what will hopefully resemble a trip/tour diary.

The take-off was less scary than I expected. It felt mostly like I had forgotten to wear shoes. And as soon as we left the ground I remember that Danielle had told me to be chewing gum. I have some now, it's peach.

Aaron let me have the window seat. Since it's my first flight he insisted. He showed me how cute our city looks from so far up, our adorable river, and the place circled in lights where they keep the criminally insane.

The moon looks like a mandarin orange from up here. Or a lego, if Aaron was describing it.

I wonder if anyone else on this plane is flying for the first time. I don't think so. They all look like seasoned veterans to me.

Back on the ground, my sister and I observed the airport clichés. Families reunited with long-lost members, lovers holding each other just a little too long, classically attractive men in their late 20s wearing good suits, talking on cell phones, and rummaging through briefcases (the latter now sitting behind that all-important curtain that separates those with money and those without).

The moon is bright white now and I wonder if we're in a different province yet. I want to ask what that group of lights is down there or which body of water, but I can't think of anyone to ask who would know the answer. It makes me miss Jay. He would make one up for me.

Aaron just contributed: our 3-hour plane ride is just like sitting through a really long, boring movie. And then he set his watch ahead to Toronto time. wow. I've never had to change time before. When I get to Australia, I'll have lost a whole day.

Maybe I should have taken some headphones when the flight attendants came around. Then I could be listening to "I'm An Adult Now" like Aaron instead of noticing every little transition in sound, speed, and movement.

Aaron informs me that the pressure in my head is due to the fact that we're coming up on Winnipeg. "So if it seems like we're getting closer to the ground, we are."

Winnipeg looks like a jewel from the sky.

It takes a long time to land a plane. It never seems to take that long on TV.

8:30pm Toronto Time

We're going to de-plane now.

12:40am Toronto Time

We're sitting in cousin Debbie's apartment which happens to be real close to the part of town that a helpful chick on the plane warned us not to spend to much time in (but don't tell my baba!). Debbie's been really great. She keeps asking us if we're hungry or if we need more towels. Quite the excellent hostess. Freya, the pitbull, seems to be quite excited to see us too. Debbie and Aaron perused the Toronto city map and located all our necessary (and unnecessary) destinations.

Flying over the city, I realized Toronto scares me way more than the plane.

Aaron is being amused by his favourite late nite talk show and my head is still a little light. I think we'll sleep soon.
