Open arms, Closed Doors: Prologue

It all started one June night, and just like any other night, Anna Greene and her friends were lounging around her parents' Floridan mansion.

They had been there a few hours when, out of the blue, Anna's mother came in and asked her to come out onto the balcony.

"Honey, what would you think, if say, we went on a trip to Paris, it would..." she started.

"Paris! Oh My Gosh, Mama! Are you serious! Ahh!! I've always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower.. oh, and the Louvre.. and" interrupted Anna, giving her mother a hug, "I've always wanted to go!"

" Oh dear.. I think you've misunderstood! Anna, darling, it'll only be your father and I!" cried an astonished Mrs. Greene.

"Wh.. wh..what.." stuttered Anna, letting go of her mother. "What do you mean?!"

" Only your father and I will be going, I'm afraid you'll have to.."

"Have to stay here!? How could you mom! You've just gotten back from three months in Monaco, you said you wouldn't leave again, at least not for another year!!" cried Anna, with a hurt look in her eyes.

"It's business!" snapped Mrs. Greene, "We're going to be gone too long, I shall not remove you from your environment for a whole year, so do not argue with me!"

"A Year!" cried Anna, "A Whole year?!"

"Do not argue with me, Anastasia Nichole Greene! I mean that! Do not argue with me!"

" You care more about your work than you do about me!" screamed Anna.

"Who puts the food on the table? All those luxuries of yours! Tell me, Anna, who bought you those Todd Oldham sandals, on your feet? Who bought you that Camaro, sitting in the driveway!! Who has given you anything you've ever asked for, and more!!! Tell me that! It is business! I would not leave you if I did not have to," her voice softened, "Darling, I only want a good future for you... You know I never like being away from you, honey, please understand this..."

"You're leaving me all alone. "Anna muttered, as she sunk into her chair

Mrs. Greene straightened her back, "Now, what kind of mother would I be if I did that? Do you really think I would actually leave you alone for a whole year! she said, incredulously.

"Then 'what'?" whispered Anna

"Well, I spoke to Jane about it the other day, on the telephone, you 'do' remember the Carters, do you not? You shall stay with them." replied Mrs. Greene, "I told her you would be able to help around the house, and watch over the twins. Just as you did while they were younger, back in Tampa, although I really doubt they need it... Anna, how old are they now? Eleven, ten, years old?"

"I think they're twelve.. and I'd be useless to them!"

"Yes, well, you'll stay with them, Jane tells me Angel's been having a little trouble with her History and English.. you could help, Anna. Well, now, I expect you to be on your best behavior, you will follow their rules, and treat them as you would your father or me."

"Yeah, yeah.. I know, but don't I get any say in this.. at all!?"

"You will do as I tell you, it's for your own good! Now, go back to your friends, they'll be wondering what's wrong. I want you to have your bags packed by Friday afternoon, this subject will not be discussed any further!'

"Yes, mother!" came Anna's reply, as she darted out into the house, tears streaming down her face.
