I think chinchillas are great pets. I bought Reuben about a year and a half ago. I did'nt known anything about them. I went into the pet store and there he was a cute little button eyed fur ball. Reuban lives in a big cage in my living room. He has a big hampster wheel hanging in his cage and loves to run in it.I let him out of his cage quite a bit. He loves to play "run and hide"with Skeater the cat. These animals are so clean. They are nothing like hampsters and mice that can smell so bad. I have gone over two weeks without cleaning his cage and NO smell. They are perky and friendly. They eat chinchilla food or rabbit food and loves rasins and sunflower seeds. He loves tree branches that he chews up to bits. They take baths by rolling in special dust that you can buy in the pet stores. Their fur is very soft. I think Chinchillas would make a great pet for older kids and teenagers that want to keep a pet in there bedrooms, or anyone that can't have cats or dogs.
