South Carolina Stringrays Due to the frequent call up of goaltenders from the ECHL to the AHL, affiliated teams generally have the name and phone number handy of a willing EBUG - Emergency Backup Goaltender. EBUGs dress and sit on the bench, they may not enter the game unless the starting goaltender is injured and unable to continue.
Such was the case earlier in the season with the Columbia Inferno, and in this particular game (December 23, 2006) with the South Carolina Stingrays, they came into town with only one netminder. In the Stingray's case, Daren Machesney had been called up to AHL Hershey. In both incidences, Jason Provino, a local Estero, Florida, man who also works at the Germain Arena Pro-Shop and participates in the local men's league, dressed as the emergency backup netminder.
Jason's luck has held for the past two years, he's yet to have to actually enter a professional game, but he certainly enjoys his "local celebrity" status, and gets some of the best seats in the house for these contests. All Rights Reserved.
