A few months ago, my mother (Carolyn Dennis Kress) told me that we had ancestors that lived in New York.
I told her I would be interested to do some research for her
since some of the place weren't all that far from Kingston. At first, I thought it would be just chasing a ghost that
only existed on paper...which it was. Then I received an email from the Greenwich NY library
stating that they think they found directions to the Dennis family cemetery which was on Zephaniah Eddy's farm in
Easton, NY. That following Saturday I drove up to Easton, and come to find out that the directions were
not all that accurate.
I called the town Historian for Easton and she gave me very explicate directions and even the name of
people who now own the land.
I found the owners of the land and he was more than happy to point out where on his property the cemetery
was...and then...pointed out where the old house of Thomas Dennis use to be. I was very excited...even though
the cellar was all that was left of the house.
The cemetery has been very neglected, arrangements with property owners have been established
to start cemetery clean up on May 13 & May 20, but both times we have been rained out. We are planning to clean the headstones,
reset the headstones and remove leaves, branches and trash. A little landscaping may be necessary in front of
Hannah's grave, the soil is being eroded away by the small brook that runs by.There maybe a possibility that
there are more graves there. There seems to be more footstones than headstones.
