Installing Tip Overlays

line

Tip overlays on a bow can be used for a variety or reasons. They strengthen the bow for use with abrasive or low stretch string materials and they add a beautiful accent to your bow if exotic or contrasting materials are used. Materials can range from Horn, Bone, Micarta or other synthetics or any choice of hardwoods. Different material can even be laminated together for that custom look.

The first thing that needs to be done is to prepare the tip of the bow to accept the overlay. Mark off equal lengths on the tips of the bow where you want the overlay to terminate. Take a blade, scraper, spokeshave or other tool and flatten the area up to the line that you marked off. Take your overlay material and size it to fit the area with a bit of extra length off the ends. Flatten it with a file or on the belt sander the best you can. Do a dry fit and look for light between the overlay and the bow’s tip. If there are gaps, address those accordingly until you’re satisfied with the fit. Take the overlay and bevel the inboard contact edge down to a knife edge on the outside of the overlay. This is the edge that contacts the bow…the bevel should be facing out and inboard on the tip. This will allow shaping of the overlay without gouging the back of the bow at the contact area. Any superglue works well for this application. The gel type is less messy and has fewer cleanups afterwards. I usually apply the overlays after final tillering and shooting. Note: If a Bamboo or wooden backing is used care must be taken while shooting the bow in. I have had some backings split at the nocks, especially if they are heavy bows or you have chosen to use a Fast Flite string. As soon as I have the bow shooting I install the overlays in those cases. Apply glue to both the limb tip and the overlay and set in place. A spring clamp is sufficient for holding in place while it dries. Cut you string nocks as you would on any other bow. Be careful to not cut through the back of the overlay or it will compromise its strength defeating the purpose you put them on to begin with…LOL
