Personality:  Appears older than her age. She is very grown-up at times
for a 15 year old. Confident, always prompt, doesn't like things that
aren't clearly black and white. Because she is hard-headed, she will NOT
forgive betrayal. Is partially strong but inside a part of her really
wants to depend on people.

Background
Yui is Miaka's best friend, and her complete opposite. She does very well
in academics and athletics. She is in the same class as Miaka, and she
sort of takes care of her less-than-smart buddy. She follows Miaka into
the library room where they find The Book of the Universe of the Four
Gods. Yui begins to read (because Miaka can't read ancient Chinese), and
they get sucked into the book. Yui gets sucked back home alone, and
doesn't re-enter the book until she trades places with Miaka in episode
8. (I think.) She eventually becomes Seiryuu no Miko, and Miaka's enemy.


Why She is Vital to the Show
You could argue that she's not necessary, but having that best buddies
turned enemies through a BIG misunderstanding makes for good chick-fight
viewing, don't you think? And without her, there would be no need for
Nakago. NOOOO!


My Comments
I like Yui, but I like Miaka better. As a writer, reader, and anime
addict, I appreciate the appeal of a "loser hero". Yui is an only child,
she is smart, and she does well in sports. She is too close to perfection
for my tastes. And she's not nearly as funny as Miaka. But I still like
her. After all, you really can't blame her for turning against Miaka. You
really have to feel sorry for her, and as Chichiri says somewhere in
episode 20-something, she really loves Miaka, and therefore hating her is
very hard. But hey, it's not her fault. I mean, who wouldn't believe
whatever Nakago said?
