July 10, 1999 - Portland, OR @ the Crystal Ballroom
By: Kevin

As expected, the show was a sell out and i (along with my girlfriend and her friend) was lucky/smart enough to have bought my tickets at ozone around a month before the actual show. before the doors even opened, there was a long line of people along the side of the crystal ballroom waiting for the doors to open. the staff there were nice, as they didn't even care about cameras, tape recorders etc. they were just concerned about bringing in booze or "drug paraphenalia". once again, we/i managed a nice position on the far left side. there was only one person between the stage and i. the need were...i don't know. the drumming reminded me of that traditional japanese drumming, but i don't think they're my type of music.
Bratmobile were fun, better than at berkeley, me thinks. probably because the crowd were more into them. the lead singer(sorry i don't know her name) had all these anecdotes and her band kept wanting to cut her off.
Sleater-kinney were seen off to the far right enjoying themselved during the set, including corin's cute dancing. so, sleater-kinney came up on stage(after bratmobile were done). janet was nice enough to have her picture taken with some people in the middle of the crowd.and um. some cool kids helped me scream her name and get her attention because i was dorky enough to make her a mix tape. so i had it out in my hand and she made a comment like "you're everywhere, aren't you ?" and i said um. that i was. and i gave her the tape and told her i wanted to be a drummer like her. she then told me she had read my review of a show(i don't know if she meant berkeley or the instore at amoeba) and she told me that mine was her favourite. i thanked her and then she was like "no, thank *you*". and then she walked away. hee. the show was...good. corin or carrie(i don't remember) said that they would be playing old tunes for us. and then the crowd cheered. i didn't write down a set list.
Inbetween songs they talked about the women's world cup(yay. go football.), carrie & corin talked about being in a checkout line at nature's(its a fancy upper class food store) and having the cashier ask whether they were fans of the band or band members(carrie was wearing an s-k shirt at nature's). the cashier said he didn't want to see s-k at the crystal ballroom(carrie told him that she was a fan) because it wasn't intimate enough, prompting several ooohs from the crowd. and some guy to make a comment about wanting to get intimate with the band. carrie then replied by saying to the crowd that the guy wanted to get intimate with the people around him. corin also had trouble getting heart factory started. they then said the crowd was very understanding of them. and random people threw their shirts up. and there was moshing in the middle of the stage, prompting corin to tell people to not mosh and just jump up and down. oh, and of course, janet played the drums barefeet again. i pogoed as usual and clapped during the clapping parts of banned from the end of the world and turn it on.some point in the show, they asked if the crowd needed water. they generously gave out bottles of water, and janet brought a whole box of water up(as in the box had bottles of water in it) and handed them out. however, us kids at the far left were left with no water. they did play a encore of three songs. and i suppose that was it. and um. hi to the neat people i talked to. i was the asian kids with devil horns who tried to start that "if yer happy & you know it clap yer hands"thing.
