October 5, 1999 - Portland, OR @ Glass factory
By: Kevin

The first band to play was the haggard. i was excited to see them, because i've just finished sts's zine and she drums for them and all, so yeah. it was really cool for them to pass out lyric sheets. i liked their lyrics. political, but not in the sense of... loads of historical references. ...and sts's drumming blew me out of the fucking water. wow. when she drums, it looks like she's punching like a boxer. its a very cool sight to see. the haggard's set was pretty short and in that short span of time, they impressed me. sarah dougher then played a set after that. i'm really no big fan of her's at all, so yeah. she was okay and played with a guy named john, i think. janet joined them on stage for their last song. after a short break, s-k took the stage. the set list was:

Ballad of the lady man
all hands on the bad one
start together
was it a lie?
i wanna be your joey ramone
factors
unknown
youth decay
one more hour
jp
backlit
get up
milkshake and honey
dig me out
you're no rock n' roll fun
pompeii
encore:
good things
end of you
little mouth

wow. i was extremely impressed by this show. they mixed up the old and new well, unlike the london matador show, where i felt there was too much new stuff. before they started to play corin told the crowd that they had eleven new songs to play. but i think they only played ten. but they were absolutely wonderful and carrie's rock star moves impressed me like never before. i could not help but grin goofily during most of the set. it was just pure joy to see them play again. 'all hands on the bad one' is an amazing song too. its been stuck in my head ever since. and 'yer no rock n' roll fun' is great also. there was another new song that i really liked, but i can't name it. the new songs do sound pretty good so far and i cannot wait to hear studio versions of 'all hands on the bad one' and 'yer no rock n' roll fun'. before s-k started to play, i wrote down a list of songs i really wanted to hear. they included start together, the end of you, heart factory, dig me out or the drama you've been craving and sold out. so i was really happy with the set list. i was talking with someone who went to the seattle show the night before and she told me the set list was pretty much the same as the seattle show. i was a bit surprised they didn't play heart factory and i think it seems like at this point they are no longer playing 'one song for you' now. there wasn't as much talking with the crowd as the crystal ballroom show in july, but carrie asked what festivals go on in the fall in portland, so i replied oktoberfest. and then carrie asked when the rose parade was. and someone in the crowd laughed and the band told her it was in may. i was delighted to hear 'i wanna be your joey ramone' and 'one more hour' because i'd never heard them at a show before. they left after 'pompeii' and naturally came back for an encore. someone from the crowd asked janet for her set list when they came back on, so janet was nice enough to get up and walk over to the person and hand them her set list. 'good things' was a very pleasant surprise and they managed to achieve something that no other band has done and probably will never do. 'good things' made me cry at a show. but 'the end of you' brought me back to sheer joy and during the carrie's line 'no bigger spotlight than shone on the ones brave enough to live', she pointed out to the crowd and that just gave me the biggest smile ever because it made it feel like 'the end of you' really was a tribute to the fans. and they ended the show with another surprise, 'little mouth'. i had so much fun and forgot about before sick for a couple hours. i danced and pogo-ed my ass off and was in music heaven. thank you once again for a fantastic show.
