The NUNAVUT stamp.
The following is a brief descritption of Nunavut.
On April 01, 1999 Canada's Northwest Territories was divided, and a new territory was created in the Eastern area. The new Territory is called NUNAVUT. This is equivalent to land that is FOUR times the size of France. Many tourist attractions and opportunities exist. Canada's northernmost national park on Ellesmere Island; sheer cliffs on Baffin Island; dog sledding; fishing; hunting; kayak expeditions into arctic fiords, river kayaking; polar bears, musk ox, narwhal whales; wildlife watching and photographing.
If you are the type who prefers the Paris nightlife over real adventure you won't be able to appreciate all that one of the world's few frontiers has to offer.
Getting There Want to drive? It will take awhile as there is no highway system linking the "far-flung" towns. Flying? The capital ,Iqaluit can be reached via Montreal, Quebec and Ottawa, Ontario. Rankin Inlet can be reached via Yellowknife, Northwest Territoies and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Within Nunavut the communties are reached by twice or thrice weekly flights.
Climate Midwinter: 3 hours of sunlight, average -30c. Summer: sunlight close to 24 hours, daytime temperature average +10c (+50f). Closer to freezing as you approach the north pole. Very little precipitation. Potential wind storms in winter.
Accommodations Iqaluit has some full service hotels. Other communties, more "spartan". Definitely make arrangements before arriving.
Food Restaurants serve a mix of flown in food and local specialties. Caribou, Musk-ox, arctic char, seal.
