Chapter 9: An Uncomfortable Premonition

Emerria had felt something, something that she hadn't felt ever before. When they had hugged her, it was if something inside of her was waking up. All of those people were waking something up in her. When they had told her that they were Magic Knights, it was as if she had already known. she felt as if she was meant to come with them and help them...but she was very afraid. She didn't want to die, but when the girls had hugged her, she knew that if she came with them on their quest, she would die.

She stopped to catch her breath and suddenly another earthquake began to rip through Cefiro. As the earth moved, Emerria screamed. The land moved in waves, cracking and splintering at its very core. As Emerria hung on for dear life to a tree that was nearby, the Magic Knights kept running towards the sound of the screams. as they came closer and closer, they could feel the earth start to crumble beneath them. Suddenly, a voice screamed from behind "Shield Enclose!" The Knights felt themselves enclosed in a warm ball of energy. They looked below them and the earth had cracked and revealed a giant gorge. They floated down on to the other side of the gorge and the light around them faded. There on the other side of the bank was Clef holding his staff up in the air.

"MASTER CLEF!" Hikaru shouted. "That is not a power you had before."

"I know." he answered. "I didn't have this one before either." He once again raised his staff and shouted "TRANSPORT SHIELD!" The Magic Knights watched as his shield formed around him and once again began to float across the gorge. As his shield faded, they could still hear the screams of Emerria in the distance.

"We need to find Emerria." Clef said quietly. "There is something I need to tell her."

The group of four followed the screams for about 400 yards and the closer they got, the more Clef covered his ears. When they saw her, she was no longer holding on to the tree but curled up in a little ball screaming. Umi, Hikaru, and Fuu ran towards her but as they were about to touch her, one of her arms flew out from her body and swiped at the girls.

"Go Away!" she snapped in a choked voice.

"No, we won't." said Umi. "We can't let you just sit there."

"Yes Eme-chan," said Hikaru. "You are are friend."

Emerria looked up at the three and scowled. "You don't want to be friends with me."

"Yes we do, Emerria-san" said Fuu. "Do you think we would brave an earthquake for an enemy?"

Before Emerria could protest again, Clef felt it was time to take matters into his own hands. He quickly walked to Emerria's shaking form and scooped her up into his arms. The three girls looked at him questioningly, and quickly fell into step behind him as he walked away.

"Emerria, we do not have time for this." He was balancing her in his arms and for the first time, his staff seemed to float along beside him. "We need to go back to the camp. I think we both need to share what we have seen."

The three girls all looked at the two with astonishment, and followed blindly behind them. Clef raised his staff and made the shield bubble again. They transported all the way back to the camp before the light faded, and when they did, Clef set Emerria on her blanket but did not step back.

"Emerria, what did you see?" Clef said as he put his hand on her shoulder. "I think that whatever it was, it was important."

Emerria looked at him, and then the Knights. She felt very guilty, and very, very selfish. "I cannot stay with you. If I stay, I will die."

All three knights looked at Emerria with a look of confused shock on their faces, but Clef just nodded very sadly. "You will die." he said softly, as if actually hearing it from her mouth was too much.

"I will die. I will dissapear forever." She said. "And I do not want to die."

"No one wants to die." said Hikaru. "There is so much to live for."

"But as Magic Knights we risk our lives each time we battle a monster." said Umi

"And each time we live, we are glad and are more powerful than before." said Fuu.

Clef nodded. "Emerria, we don't want you to die either." He paused before continuing. "But it is your destiny. Only your heart can change your destiny. You should know that Cefiro is a world of will, and if you do not want to die, you will not die." He hoped in his mind that this was not true, for even now, he felt closer to this girl than anyone else he had ever met in his life.

"You think so?" she said in a thick voice.

"I know so." Then Clef did something he had never before done in his entire life. He gently wrapped his arms around her and hugged her.
