Catch 22 Interview from Debtzine
Skippy: Okay, start off with your name and what you play.
Kevin: um, I'm Kevin and I play trumpet
Gordie: How do you feel about the loss of members?
Kevin: Ahh, its like. . .I with that. . its like. . .well it's a good thing that they left because there where problems with them, they didn't really put their whole heart into the band, so uh they had to break the band up and ya know we replaced them and I think that the replacements that we have right now are like, honestly I feel that they are better for the band and for the personality of the band and that they add a lot, a lot more than the original members. So I think that it worked out okay.
Skippy and Gordie: Yeah.
Kevin: Even though it sucks when a band has to change its singer and its guitar and bass player its still, well it worked out okay.
Leddy: Yeah. It sounded like. . .
Kevin: What did you guys think?
Leddy, Skippy, Gordie: I thought it was great, the lead singer was great.
Gordie: I have never seen your old one, but I have your CD and I have had it for about 5 months now. Favorite band.
Kevin: So do you think it is better or the same or what?
Gordie: Uh. . .
Skippy: Different but still good.
Gordie: Got energy.
Leddy: Well when I heard that like, uh the singers and stuff changed I thought well ya know its probably not going to be as good of a show as I expected, but it, it exceeded my expectations.
Kevin: Awesome.
Gordie: We have a friend that lives in ah, New Jorzy, and she dates the guitarist for One Cool Guy.
Kevin: Really. . .
Gordie: Yeah. And when she said her friend went to go see you guys
Kevin: Keith.
Gordie: Yeah, we meet her online. . .so anyway, she said that her friend went to go see you guys and that there was a big difference so we were worried it was great.
Kevin: Awesome.
Leddy: On the tour, what is the weirdest, coolest, anything with an EST on the end, thing that has happened?
Kevin: Well the coolest in Chicago, when it almost sold out, and it was up to 1100 people and it was just really rad, the kids just really came out and supported Catch 22, I think that a lot of respect for that is lost these days ya know, cause like I lot of people, they don't understand that its, its not about clothes, its not about like. . . Ya know its about like the bands that are playing, its about the kids that are at the shows, and it was just like a very cool show, I dunno it was just, really really good people and feeling in the room, ya know I mean if kids fell down, then people would pick them up, and when kids went crowd surfing, ya know they weren't getting ripped down, they were ya know. . . it was just a really really cool, really cool vibe. The strangest thing that has happened were that our tires fell off our car two days in a row, cause when we were in Chicago someone loosened the lug nuts, and one tire fell off one day and we missed that show in ohio, and then the next day we missed another show because another tire feel off, so that was prolly the strangest thing that has happened.
Gordie: Well a lotta kids get. . .not a lotta kids get to see you guys here, but the ones that did I thought put out good energy.
Kevin: Yeah it was awesome. Ya know you always hope fer a uh, as many kids as possible to like you. You always wanna see a pit full of 300 kids ya know, but that's not the case when you are an opening band, um so uh, were just happy if one kid sings along, It doesn't. . .like I said ya know, it doesn't matter, its just uh, if one kid is in the audience, and uh when I say kids I don't mean it disrespectfully. . .
Leddy, Skippy: No no no
Kevin: hehe, well I consider myself a kid too ya know, um, but um, if one kid is singing along, um then ya gotta put the same show on every single night, ya know what I mean?
Leddy: yeah.
Kevin: So ya know that's usually what we do.
Leddy: I um, noticed actually that after you guys played a lot of people were like hey, they are really good, and went over and bought yer CD so um. . .
Kevin: Yeah, we sold some merchandise tonight. That's the idea ya know, were on a, we have been on tour with Ten Foot Pole and Digger for the last couple weeks, and the tours almost over, so were kinda sad, because its been going really well, um actually I think we have three more days, but um, this has been really cool, to get a chance to play with Against All Authority.
Skippy: And then yer gonna go on with other bands right?
Kevin: Yeah we have um. . .
Skippy: Telegraph I saw. . .
Kevin: Hopefully. . .
Gordie: I really hope so, with Telegraph you guys would. . .
Kevin: Were not touring with Telegraph. I will tell you a story off the record, but please don't put this in the zine. . .
Skippy: Yeah sure. That means turn it off Leddy!
[HAHA YOU DON"T KNOW!]
Kevin: I mean seriously, we will play with any kind of band whether it's a ska band, a punk band, or a hardcore band, ya know like. . .Right now were, are you guys familiar with the band Shutdown?
Gordie: Yeah.
Kevin: Yeah, we like really wanna tour with them, but um, we are trying to work it out, we are trying to find markets where like, there not stuck on that like, hardcore, ska, yeah know like how cool would it be to see Catch 22 and Shutdown in the same night. Like a punk/ska band and punk and hardcore band in like one night, I mean I don't wanna go to a show where. . . when I go to a show ya know, I don't wanna see the same kinda bands all night, ya know I wanna see like a punk band, ska band, hardcore band, ya know it's a little ridicules, but its gonna be like that ya know. They are always gonna be like that.
Leddy: yeah I hate it how there are all these punks that oh ska sucks, and I mean like if you don't like it then don't listen to it. Don't be like anti-ska.
Kevin: Exactly…
Skippy: Whats your. . .
Kevin: Oh sorry. . . I was just gonna tell you guys that, do you know the assorted jellybeans?
Leddy, Skippy, Gordie: Yeah.
Leddy: I saw them live.
Kevin: We might do a tour with them. Here actually.
Leddy, Skippy: Oh that's great.
Gordie: How old are they?
Kevin: I dunno I guess prolly about as young as us. Were only 19.
Gordie: Really? Ahh, I though you guys were like 26.
Kevin: Nope, im a 19, our singer is 21, everyone else is 19 except for Pat, There are two Pats. The one with the long hair is 21, and the other one, the bass player is the youngest, 18.
Gordie: Wow.
Skippy: Whats your favorite movie?
Kevin: Oh, wow. . .
Skippy: You don't have to answer that. . .
Kevin: No, um well I have a lot of favorite movies. Um Star Wars is good, I think that my favorite is the Empire, Yeah empire is probably the best, but the whole trilogy rocks, and um Resovuor Dogs.
Leddy: What are your musical inspirations?
Kevin: Um. . .
Skippy: Or favorite bands. . .
Kevin: Um me personally, I personally am influenced by every band that I have ever listened to, which is a lot of bands. Um, ahh, I found myself writing a song today, and I was kinda like, ya know what? This sounds kinda like Green Day. Ya know what I mean. Cause ya know there is nothing on our old CD that sounds like Green Day, but I was thinking that someone is gonna say that this sounds like Green Day. But ya know we are influenced by a lotta bands. Me personally, Less Than Jake, um Green Day, NOFX, Pennywise, uh a lotta bands like that. And recently, I have been influenced a lot by actually bands on our label like Hatebreed, and stuff.
Skippy: So your favorite at the time. . .
Kevin: Less Than Jake is my favorite of all time. I dunno why they just are.
Skippy: Yeah I like um too.
Kevin: Yeah there fuckin amazing. I uh dream to play with them on day. I have meet them a couple of times. I just wanna play so bad. But I don't want it to be like Warped Tour ya know I want it to be like us and them, ya know what I mean, like in a club and stuff.
Leddy: Have you ever asked them?
Kevin: Um we have contacted them, but um, everyone wants to play with Less Than Jake, ya know what I mean so its kinda hard and actually Voodoo Glow Skulls are probably my second favorite band, although I haven't been listening to them all that much recently.
Gordie: I was surprised when I saw you guys on Victory, ya know cause it's a lotta hardcore bands, so I was like wow, they gotta ska band! So at first I thought that you guys were a hardcore band.
Skippy, Leddy, Kevin: hehe.
Kevin: Yeah we get that a lot, but it feels really cool being with them.
Gordie: Are you guys the only ska band on the label?
Kevin: Yeah, they probably will never sign another ska band, it was a one time thing, but I feel fortunate.
Skippy: And what about Pinball?
Kevin: Well we were supposed to do a 7" with them but it didn't really work out.
Skippy: But you have a song on one of their comps right?
Kevin: Yeah, American Pie, and On & On & On.
Leddy: Isn't this show the one with the most bands that you have played with on the tour? Because I looked on the internet, and you had four bands here and three everywhere else.
Kevin: Yeah yeah yeah, Against All Authority just decided to headline tonight, and they wanted to pay with Ten Foot Pole I guess so yeah.
Gordie: [coughing it up] I think that I sung so much tonight that my lyrincs are falling out.
Kevin: Hehe.
Leddy: Speaking of websites and stuff whats up with your new website?
Kevin: Well what do you think?
Leddy: Well it needs some work. . .
Skippy: its like the same thing before, but in a different format.
Kevin: Yeah well it's a different site and we just wanted, well we were gonna get like, well do any of you guys play guitar?
Gordie, Leddy: Yeah.
Kevin: Well we were gonna get some tabs up there.
Gordie: Yeah last night I went there and was like yeah im gonna play some Catch 22 tonight, but then I clicked on it and it was like "BACK."
Kevin: Yeah its not working yet. . .But we are also gonna get some QuickTime video, and some real audio. And try to make it more interesting than the old site. It's a little bite more colorful that the old site. We well get some new pictures on there from the tour.
Gordie: Yeah, I just gotta say that yer new lead singer is awesome.
Leddy: Yeah and the bass player to.
Gordie: Yeah were did you get him from?
Kevin: Um he was from a local band.
Skippy: Whats the story behind your name, like from the book or whatever?
Kevin: Yeah we just got it from the book.
Skippy: So you like the book?
Kevin: Um not me personally but some other old members yeah.
Skippy: Alright um, any last questions? Any last words?
Kevin: Yeah, buy our CD!
Skippy: hehe.
Gordie: Wait one more thing. If you were stranded on a desert island, and you could be with three women, who would you be with?
Kevin: Um, my girlfriend, my mom, and my grandmother.
Skippy: hehe, okay welp that's it.
