PROLOGUE
Life isn't easy when two are divided
And one has decided to bring down the curtain
And one thing's for certain
There's nothing to keep them together

I believe in fate more strongly than I believe in anything else. More than I believe in God, more than I believe in myself. It's like....remember "Choose Your Own Adventure" books? You read a little, then choose which way the story goes, which page to turn to, which path to follow, and there's a million different combinations, whole other stories lying in wait, that you could have chosen. That how I see life. I don't look at fate like some people do, believing that your path in life was laid out at birth and nothing you do can change it. No. That's not what I believe. Life is a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book. There are paths laid out, but the path you take depends on the choices you make, each choice taking you farther and farther into a maze that has no right way out. I know it's truly sad, but a line from Can't Hardly Wait sums it up best: "There is fate. But it only takes you so far. Once you're there, it's up to you to make it happen."
These thoughts entered my head briefly that lazy June afternoon, and quickly disappeared. But they would return in the following days, and often. Because, that day, the four of us chose a path. An important one. I don't think any of us realized that day the wheels that we were putting into motion with one harmless conversation, and one serious pact.
