‘Heads Are Gonna roll" is the first major label release from this young Los Angeles area band. Although it hardly seems like there is any more room in the world for another Southern California Ska-punk-skater band the Hippos are worth making room for. The album is filled with upbeat and positive tunes, all written by the band except a cover of "Always Something There To Remind Me." The Beatles influence of the Hippos is so pronounced on the second cut, "Wasting My Life" this is exactly what one would expect the Beatles to sound like if they were emerging today. The rest of the album continues to entertain with lighthearted upbeat retro-ska music. The remake of the 1960’s hit "Always Something There To Remind Me" captures hints of both the 60’s and 80’s versions mixed in with the modern ska sounds for an entirely new version. The audiophile listener may be a bit let down by the compressed soundstage and lack of separation between the instruments. The less than perfect recording and mastering do not however detract from the enjoyment of the album. If you are looking for some ska music that is fresh and upbeat give the Hippos a try.
