"Show Me Your Ways, O Lord"
(Psalm 25)
When it came to writing a song to accompany the story section
"Three Women Called Margaret" we could use no other source
than Psalm 25.
Whichever account on the events of 11th May 1685
that you read, the one thing that is always mentioned is that
Margaret Wilson sang a metrical version of that particular psalm
that day. Her strong, confident young voice made a lasting
impression on those who listened.
It is doubtful if there is a more appropriate psalm - a fact that was
brought home to us as soon as we began to work on this song.
It is not intended to be a slavish translation of the original -
but to give something of the feeling behind the psalm.
John wrote the tune at the same time as Elizabeth re-visited the
"Martyrs' Stake" near Wigtown.
