The White Cockade

My love was born in Aberdeen,
The bonniest lad that ere was seen,
But now he makes our heart fu’ sad,
He takes the field wi’ his white cockade.
O, he’s a ranting, roving lad,
He is a brisk an’ bonny lad,
Betide what may, I will be wed,
And follow the boy wi’ the white cockade.

I’ll sell my rock, my reel, my tow,
My gude grey mare, and hawkit cow,
To buy mysel’ a tartan plaid,
To follow the boy wi’ the white cockade.
O, he’s a ranting, roving lad,
He is a brisk an’ bonny lad,
Betide what may, I will be wed,
And follow the boy wi’ the white cockade.

The White Cockade was the ribbon emblem worn by the Jacobites during the 1745 uprising.
Tradition has it that Charles Edward Stuart plucked a rose in the grounds of Cameron of Locheil and put it in his bonnet. The ribbon cockades were made later while the Prince was in Edinburgh.
The rose still grows and is a species rose which is propagated by taking cuttings.
Afterwards, bushes were planted by house gates as a sign the Jacobites were welcome there.
One grows in our garden where there once was a gate - I expect a Jacobite could still climb the fence to gain access!
