set list shortage : Apparently the set up people didn't make one for Carrie, who early on said to Corin that she'd have to share hers. In the middle of the show she mischievously dragged Corin's with her foot back to her side of the stage. Then Corin had to ask Carrie what song was next.

smoking : Corin asked the crowd not to smoke while the band was playing, as someone mentioned she recently did somewhere else on this tour. I'd never heard her do that before. I wonder if it is a regular thing for her now.

moshing : A couple of people near the front were annoying most everyone around them during the first song or two with moshing that was overly vigorous. After the second song, a bunch of people started pointing at them and yelling requests to Carrie to do something about it. Corin got involved and said they wanted everyone to have fun, but to be respectful of others. Carrie leaned over and said off mike to the people in question "It seems like you're really annoying a lot of people. Maybe you should move over to the side." They swore they'd tone it down and they stayed. They got pretty energetic again later, but people didn't seem as angry then, so I guess it wasn't as bad. I can't say for sure, as all this was about 5 to 10 feet to my right, and I was trying to focus on the band and not the crowd.

slow songs ? : (Hi, Steph.) I really noticed tonight versions of several songs were slower then the CDs and slower than when I've previously heard them performed live or on live bootlegs.

birthdays : Someone gave little packages for all three band members to Corin. Coring pointed out that hers said "Happy early birthday", Janet's said "Happy late Birthday" and teasingly asked Carrie what hers said. Carrie replied "Happy Birthday". Later, between the first and second sets of encores, the crowd, or at least the people around me up front, sang Happy Birthday to her.

opening bands : I liked C.O.C.O. more than I would have thought I'd like a bass guitar / drums duo. Their tunes were really catchy. The White Stripes are very talented, and had moments when they impressed me and I was getting into their music, but guitar solos really don't appeal to me all that much, no matter how well done.

humor : One guy kept yelling for "Good Things" after every song, and at one point, Carrie told him he was wasting his energy, because they were going to play what was on the set list. He persisted, and was ecstatic when they played it during the first set of encores. When they came out for the second set, he yelled "Good Things" again in a real serious tone which made Carrie laugh briefly, even though it seemed like she was struggling not to and thus encourage him. I found that funny, but maybe it's a "you had to be there" thing.

Great doesnt even come close. The last 2 times Ive seen s-k at the 9:30 club have been nothing short of amazing. For whatever reason, they seem incredibly relaxed and somewhat playful at DC shows, in contrast to the Philly shows Ive seen in recent years. Crowd has a LOT to do with it. Philly crowds are bizarrely quiet. Anyways... I was way in the back, but didnt mind. Still had a great view due to my height. Carrie was notably intense all night, jumping around even more than usual, throwing her guitar all over the place, over her head, etc. Corin just gets more and more relaxed onstage everytime I see her. And she is just SOOOOO into the songs. I can just get lost in her facial expressions. Then there's Janet, aka Greatest Living Drummer. My God, she is unbelievable. There were numerous points in the set where I just closed my eyes and let my body go to the sound of her amazing playing.

As for the music, one thing I love about seeing bands on the second leg of a tour is how the set lists become pared down to what works really well onstage. This one was like that, with fewer songs off the latest record, and many more uptempo tunes and just lots more rocking out in general. As Chris pointed out earlier, yes they are playing some of their songs slower than on prior tours/records. I noticed this most glaringly at the Philly show in the spring, where their performance seemed leaden at times. I think, like any band that performs a lot for many years, they are constantly struggling to make older songs sound fresh. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. It worked very well tonite. In some ways, this set seemed like a "best s-k songs to play live" set, at least in my eyes. At past shows, there were always one or two songs that I wasnt thrilled with. There were none at this one.

Set list, NOT in order (can't remember things that well. Actually, you'll notice that theyre listed in order by album they're on, as that's how i jarred my memory)

Get Up
Ironclad
Ballad of a Ladyman
All Hands On The Bad One
Youth Decay
The Professional
Pompeii
Start Together
End of You
Quarter to Three (WOW! I was pleasantly surprised to hear this one)
Dig Me Out+ This has developed into an incredible jam that went on for a good 10 minutes at least last night, with Carrie moving the riffs from snarling and fast to quiet and slow and Janet playing more ferociously than i've ever seen. WOW.
Turn It On
Words + Guitar - I love the way theyve changed this, dropping down REAL low and quiet during the bridge, then lurching back loud and fast for the refrains.
Little Babies
Not What You Want
Call The Doctor
Little Mouth
Good Things
I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone
Tapping
