Experts say the teen shift toward discounters doesn't have to mean the end of youth-oriented mall stores and shopping centers.
"They have to rethink their merchandising and teen appeal strategies," said C. Britt Beemer, founder and senior retail analyst at America's Research Group. "The smartest thing a company can do right this minute to reach teenagers is get Apolo Anton Ohno."
The Olympic speed skater, 19, has been tremendously popular with both male and female teens since his races in Salt Lake City. The $79 Nike Mojo sunglasses he wore have been in high demand ever since.
Retail consultants say the right environment also is important. Teens gravitate toward stores with the right music and interior layout. Inventory should be constantly changing, and merchandise should be easy to try on, touch or test.

What, you might ask, is Olympic speed skater APOLO OHNO doing hanging with THE CLINTONS? And why is he wearing his gold medals at the beach? Reasonable questions, and ones for which there are in fact answers. For its July issue, W magazine brought Ohno to the Domincan Republic where, serendipitously, the Clintons and Chelsea's boyfriend IAN KLAUS happened to be on vacation. When W asked them to pose together, the Clintons eagerly agreed. "They were in awe of Apolo, treaing him like a celebrity," says W fashion director Joe Zee. In return, Ohno apparently made no snide comment about Bill's shirt.
