XXX Smut are a punk band out of Illinois. They are punk in the style of Antiseen, Black Flag , The Ramones, The Exploited, Poison Idea, etc. and are unlike the pop punk nonsense that is all over the airwaves nowadays. The band have great names such as Trashbag, Handsome Mick, Mr. Quick, Billy Fury and Johnny Hotrod. They say that they came up with their name when they were drunk and thought it was funny so they stuck with it. The name of the band is directly related to the song that I am reviewing, "I want a Vivid girl".
I want a Vivid girl is dedicated to the porn stars who made or still make movies on the Vivid label. Quite a few stars names are dropped in the song, some known and some unknown. The lyrics are kind of cheesy but it's a fun song and is not meant to be taken seriously. The music is good old three chord punk rock. Nothing technical here but it works well. This sure beats the hell out of the whining pop punk of bands like Blink 182, Story Of The Year, Dashboard Confessional, Yellowcard, etc. Take the time to listen to their other songs as well which are really cool too.
So check out XXX Smut. They may not be breaking any new ground with their style of music but it's cool stuff to listen to and it is a breath of fresh air when you are forced to listen to some of the crap that is thrown on the airwaves.
