Album name: Black Tangerine
Singer: David Tao
Language: Mandarin
Date of release: August 2002

After two-and-a-half years, the wait is finally over. The man is back. And he's back with style.

Before the likes of Lee Hom and Jay Chou, David Tao was the R&B man. His first album is still very much one of the best albums around and till this day it still remains a favourite album of many. It earned him a strong following of fans then who have diligently followed his musical progress. His second album, I'm OK, was another masterpiece and even though it wasn't as R&B as his first effort, fans applauded and accepted the different musical styles that he had injected into that album.

And now, Black Tangerine. Wow. The wait was well worth it.

This album is a pretty moving effort. With it, David expresses his frustrations and innermost feelings. You can tell he has put a lot of heartand soul into his songs. Track 3 in particular is a truly heartrending and touching piece. It will pull at your heartstrings as you realise that David isn't just making music, he's sending out a message. And that message is one of light, life and love. To remind us of who we are and what/where our responsibilities lie. To quote a paragraph from his forewords in this album:

"The world is a different place today (and so am I) than it was five years ago or even a year ago and I simply couldn't envision myself continuing to make music only for entertainment purposes that didn't reflect the world we live in. I've always seen music as a responsibility and a privilege but also as a gift from the Lord. Therefore this album holds even more meaning to me as I believe it is a gift of love and hope. And I firmly believe that love is what we need in our world today."

His title track, Black Tangerine, is a mix of R&B and rock - a loud, noisy piece - that exemplifies his frustrations and annoyance well. Angel and Melody are captivating pieces too while Let's fall in love is classic David R&B. I particularly like his rendition and interpretation of the late Teresa Teng's Moon over my heart. Lovely musical arrangement with David's trademark R&B touch. It gives the song new life and is in no way inferior at all to the original rendition.

Then there's the bonus English track, Katrina. So simple yet so beautiful, it captures the innocence of first love well. And once again David proves to us that not only is he adept at penning in Chinese, he's equally as talented when it comes to English.

If you've never heard of David Tao, you've been missing out on one of Asia's best singer/composer/producer all this while. Just where have you been?

Listen to this album with your heart. Do that and I assure you, you'll find that this is indeed one of the best albums of 2002.
