Singer: Twins
Language: Cantonese
Year of release: 2001 - 2002

Saccharine sweet tunes and teeny-boppy melodies - that's what Twins are about.

Really, I might be embarrassed if caught listening to their music. After all, the first time I ever came across this duo was when I watched them perform 'live' at the end-year music awards. Let's face the facts: these girls can't sing live for nuts - yet they were all over the awards ceremonies. I know the HK music industry places more emphasis on image than on talent, but this was rather overdoing it. And aren't the girls themselves embarrassed to be singing off-key all the time when they're on stage? I know I would be...

Okay, so you're probably thinking now that this review is going to diss them like crazy. Well, you thought wrong.

I was curious as to why it was that Twins were so popular. All right, the girls were young and cute. But that was about it. Anyway, I thought I'd give their music a try. After all, there had to be something else there for them to have swept so many awards in 2001.

Ah, the wonders of engineering. Like many other Hong Kong singers, Twins sound way better on CD than they do live. And listening to their songs, I think I can begin to understand why it is that they are so popular. The songs are easy-listening with very catchy beats. They sing about student crushes, teenage love, girly things and the like. What I like best about their music though is that it doesn't sound pretentious - it's love and life from the point of view of a pre-teen or teenager. I don't exactly know how old Charlene and Gillian are, but they do look young enough. So I'm just going to assume these girls are probably in their teens or just out of them. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I find them more believable singing these sweet tunes than if they were singing soppy ballads and trying to sound mature when they obviously don't look or act it.

I won't go so far as to say that they are good or great, but they certainly are a breath of fresh air...although it would be interesting to see how long they can last...and if they still sound convincing enough singing such saccharine tunes a few years down the road or if they can successfully and convincingly switch to more 'matured' stuff.
