Is 'Passions' Really a Soap Opera?
Written by ePassions

Image property of 'ePassions.' 'Passions' is the newest international soap opera out there—and that fact makes a lot of room for new ideas. Soap land has repeated many things, such as evil twins, scandals, and lost loves. Basically, romance is the core center.

Even though "Passions" has all the elements of a soap, it has it's unique qualities; things you would never see on any other soap opera, unless hell froze over—literally! What other soap opera has 300-year-old battling witches, with a talking "Pinocchio" doll and hellfire portals (in basements and closets)?

On "Passions," we see a lot of supernatural things. Such as the teenagers being trapped in hell, Hecuba's mirror, "Tiny Tim*," and Evil Charity. This makes the show a powerful show, since it introduces supernatural events to soapland, even though "Days of Our Lives" and "PC" have had their supernatural moments. Evil forces in the basement, and talking angel statues, to psychic blind priests! So why is it always listed in the soap opera section? *(this reference to Timmy has no relevance to the untimely death of Josh Ryan Evans.)

Image property of 'ePassions.'Not only that, but the romantic plotlines are very different as well. When "Passions" first started, a lot of women dreamed of being with certain people. For instance, Theresa and Kay. And what makes this piece so powerful, is the forward and backward progression in those plotlines, not to mention past loves and lives. However, many of these determined women have stalker qualities—which may raise some commotion in the feminism department.

"Passions" is also known for it's humour—corny humour, but funny! Hecuba has appeared in more wacky outfits and costumes than Cher has! So has Timmy, from a rabbi, Image property of 'ePassions.'to Santa's little helper! Last year, Ivy poured a bucket of paint on to Rebecca's head, and splashed a glass of wine in Julian's face. Sheridan's stubborn ways are hilarious in their own right! The way she is so 'independant,' and how she always throws things at Luis—well, before they got together anyways! Not to mention Sheridan's situation with Brian and Luis—soapy, but in a very "far-out" manner!

"Passions" has done many interesting movie spoofs as well! For instance, "Passions" has done "Carrie," "Poltergeist," "Psycho," "Pinocchio," "Titanic," "The Wizard of Oz," and much, much more!

And don't forget the teenagers. In many other soap operas, the teenagers are just all lovey-dovey, betrayel and what not. Passions has a little of that too (Charity and Miguel, Whitney, Chad, and Simone), but there are also a lot of cat fights Image property of 'ePassions.'between siblings! There are forces of good and evil. The teens possess powers (at least the Standish ones!) that they don't even know about. And talking trees and floating heads seem like nothing compared to other hijinks we see. Like when Timmy chopped of Tabitha's head!

So tell me... do you think that Passions is just some old soap opera? Does it deserve it's own genre title—like "comedy-drama," like "Ally McBeal?" Well whatever it is, the fans love it!
