Introduction and Explanation
"For those who know me, none is necessary, for those who don't, none is possible..."
...but that doesn't mean I won't try!
First of all, you may be asking, "why this site?"
The short answer (to quote Baldrick from Blackadder): Whim.
The long answer (also quoting Baldrick from Blackadder): It was a whim.
The much longer and more helpful answer: It seemed like a good idea at the time!
The full story is as follows:
Once upon a time, I was randomly looking at buttons and labels on my email's homepage, when I suddenly discovered a little label I'd never paid much attention to before. It said "your webpage."
Upon discovering this label, all I can remember thinking was "But, I don't have a webpage..." And so, I clicked the little button underneath that said "Create."
POOF! Suddenly, a message appeared and I found myself staring at a screen that said "Congratulations, you now have a webpage!"
Needless to say, I was quite proud of myself. I made something happen! Hooray for me...right? "Well that's nice," I remember thinking, "but now what?"
With no prior website-creating experience, I suddenly realized that I was now the proud owner of a completely blank plot of Internet space, an utterly wasted spot on the world-wide-web.
Since that fateful first day, I have learned quite a bit and what you see is the product of having a bit of free time. This site's main feature has become the Quantum Leap/Enterprise Crossover, a growing comic-book style fan fiction story.
Because there is so much that I would like to put up, and not nearly as much free time as I'd like, this site is constantly under construction, with new additions coming whenever I get the chance, all in my realm of geeky interests: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Gaming, British Comedy, and Comic Books. (It makes for an interesting combination...)
And who am I, exactly?
Considering that this site is called "gelfling's geek zone," it would seem given that I am the gelfling. I am a college student with a great love for all things strange, unusual and geeky. The name "the gelfling" is the handle by which I am (best) known when I am online and by which I can often be found on various message boards.
Contrary to popular belief, I did not pick this handle based on the elf-like Muppet protagonists in Jim Henson's film, The Dark Crystal. (It was a lovely film, but I had no idea that was what they were called when I chose the name...)
I had actually derived the name from the GELFs (Genetically Engineered Life Forms) from the "cult" science-fiction British comedy series Red Dwarf. The GELFs come in many forms, and I was inspired by the "Polymorph," a shape-shifting being that feeds off of heightened emotions. Being someone of short stature, I figured that my personal GELF would probably be on the smallish side: a small GELF, hence a gelfling (always in lower-case letters). Ah well...I thought it was clever, anyway...
The site, in detail:
The Linkway
This is where you can visit some of my favorite sites, most of which are relevant in some way or another to books, shows, etc. that I have mentioned on the site.
In a Nutshell
This section is for all my friends and other people who very often have no idea what on Earth I'm going on about. This is where you can find a "mini-lesson" on the shows, books, etc. that I mention on the site. The lessons include pretty much all the important aspects--who, what, where, when, why, as well as a couple of unnecessary (but interesting) details and minute (I hope) spoilers.
Feedback
This is where you can give me your two cents, participate in the poll, sign the guestbook and give me feedback on errors or suggestions for addition to the site.
