Gravy train

不知道你有没有碰到过gravy train这个短语，总之你无论如何不要将它想象成一种火车。

Gravy一种意思是 "加了面粉等用于调味的肉汁"(the juice which comes out of meat as it cooks, thickened with flour, etc., to serve with meat and vegetables)，这种意思逐渐引申为"好东西"。从十九世纪六十年代到二十世纪中期，gravy经常在戏剧中，尤其是滑稽戏中作为俚语使用，意思是"简单的角色"。

Gravy另一种基本的意思是 "钱财"(money or profit)，这层意思出现于十九和二十世纪之交。到1910年左右，gravy就有了"意想不到的轻而易举获得的钱财"(profit or benefit, especially if unexpected or easily obtained)的意思，1930年左右，这层意思又有了更细微的指代，专指"通过不正当手段轻易得到的钱财，不义之财"(money that is unearned or obtained illicitly; graft)，这种意思至今仍在使用。

Gravy train就是gravy的引申义组成的词组，意思是"不费劲而能赚大钱的机会，轻松而收益大的工作；美差，肥缺"(something from which many people can make money or profit without much effort, and which one would therefor like to join in)，那么动词短语ride the gravy train的意思则是寻找挖掘这样一个美差，相反的我们说 fall off the gravy train 或者the gravy train hasn't derailed，来表达丢掉肥缺的意思。不过，以上这些说法都是俚语的说法，正式场合都不会用这些表达方式的。
