Jessica's Universe: Literature: Poetry

POETRY

Poetry is not for everybody. But if you find a poem or poet that you really like, it is special. There is certainly an abundance of poetry on the internet, so here I will list some great sites and poems that are dear to my heart.

My Pages

"The Naming of Cats"   by T. S. Elliot. This is my favorite poem! I read it as a kid, and for some reason (perhaps my love of cats!) it has stuck with me. This is part of Elliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" which can be found in full-text here .

Cats in Poetry and Quotations My collection of poems and quotes featuring cats.

My Picks

"It Couldn't Be Done" by Edgar A. Guest. My high school english teacher made us memorize poems to recite to the class. Most were from old timers that I didn't find interesting or memorable. But there were a few that stuck with me, this one included. It is very inspirational... Other good ones that I remember from class are The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost and The Daffodils (I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud) by William Wordsworth.

Poet: Tim Seibles
Tim is a professor of Creative Writing at Old Dominion University and I have had the pleasure of listening to him read his poems several times. Amazing! The man has a gift unlinke any other modern poet I have known. He has published several books of poetry, including, Body Moves (Corona Press, 1988), Hurdy Gurdy (Cleveland State, 1992), Kerosene (Ampersand Press, 1995), and Hammerlock (Cleveland State University Press, 1999). You can check out a sample of his writing here at "Ploughshares."
