Dontaku in Fukuoka

Dontaku is a citywide festival that takes place all over Fukuoka sometime in the fall. It always rains for Dontaku. There are performances and parades all over the city. Neighborhood clubs that worked on building mikoshi , the float that they carry on their shoulders, all year long take them and parade them through the city. They chant rhthymically as they carry it; someone told me it helps them to keep their stength and focus. It’s quite a sight. Foreigners usually take part in a parade but it got rained out that year (although some of my friends went to the parade and got free clappers – wooden rice spoons as far as I could tell -- and hapi).

Probably the best part of the festival was seeing the whole city dressed up and recreating their own traditional culture.
