K.D. Carnahan Farms, Inc.

Welcome to the Web page for K.D. Carnahan Farms, Inc. We are located on Country Road 57 about 4 miles west of Butler, Indiana. We are a combination crop and dairy farm, with our main interest in dairy, specifically Grade A milk production. We also host the annual DeKalb county AG Day event where a large number of third graders have the opportunity to learn "hands on" what a farm is all about, such as "where does milk come from...not the store!!"

HELP!! We are currently looking to add acreage to increase our corn and soybean base. We produce these "cash crops" as well as fluid milk in order to stay diverse in attempt to stay ahead of the market volitility. We are looking to acquire additional cropland to rent in DeKalb county. We offer many rental agreement options and are very competetive in our cash rents. Please contact us if you have or know of any such land so we can make the most of our opportunities in production agriculture. Or contact information is listed below.

We recently expanded to accommodate 200 milk cows. Our current herd is very productive, with a herd average of over 25,000 pounds per cow per year, which turns out to be about 80 lbs. per cow per day. That is equal to about 2,907 gallons per cow in one year! We are very excited about the current dairy industry and our opportunities to advance.

Our milk cows are treated with the very best care that we can provide. We pay very close attention to cow comfort and health. Balanced rations, clean housing, and manure management are a must on dairy farms these days if you want to be productive. The manure from our cows is stored in an enclosed, underground cement pit until it can be hauled out on to the fields under I.D.E.M. regulations. Our cows are evaluated once a month to be assured that they are in the best health possible. We also attempt to have their hoof trimmed at least twice a year to maintain good feet. Health care is also issued to calves immediately after birth. They are given vaccines and nutrient rich milk within the first 30 minutes. Flies and insects are not a problem with us as they are on some farms because we utilize a fly control program issued by Orkin. We do our best to keep the place clean and healthy and the State Board of Health makes sure we are doing so by inspecting us at least 4 times a year.

We are also trying to better the environment at our farm. We have several water and sediment control basins (W.A.S.C.O.B.) and filter strips along the ditches to control erosion. These filter strips also provide a place of refuge for small wildlife. We also utilize the planting practice of "no-till." We have been using no-till on our corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and wheat for the past 10 years now. This practice has been proven to help in reducing the greenhouse gases that cause global warming. This practice also improves the surface water quality. By leaving the previous crops' residue on the field, soil particles tend to stay in place making wind and water erosion effects minimal. This keeps the soil rich in nutrients essential for growing crops. It also keeps dust levels down. This residue also provides food and shelter for some wildlife during the winter months.

These environmentally friendly practices have been named "Best Management Practices." We take pride in using these best management practices and we will continue to try to better the environment and the image of farms for years into the future.
