OBITUARY- STEPHEN MARS
"Well Known People Die During Week- Stephen Mars and Mrs. Mary C. Gogarty
Known in Washingtonville- Two persons well known in Washingtonville died
during the past week. Stephens Mars, a retired farmer of near Florida, and
father of Stephen H. Mars, of Washingtonville, died January 7 at his home
of pneumonia. Mr. Mars was born in Germany, July 15, 1842, and came to this
country in 1865, settling in Florida where he spent the remainder of his life.
He was a charter member of Highland Engine and Hose Company of Florida and
for fifty years was a member of Wawayanda Lodge of Odd Fellows of Warwick.
His wife was Anna L. DeGraw, of Bellvale. She died two years ago. Surviving are two sons and a daughter: Stephen H. Mars, of Washingtonville; Dr. Jesse D. Mars, of Florida, and Mrs. Joseph Jacoby, of Newburyport, Mass. A son, Andrew Mars, died three years ago, and another son, John Mars, died ten years ago.
Mr. Mars was a man who had gained the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He was kind hearted and genial and had a remarkable knowledge of agriculture being one of the most successful black dirt farmers. His advice was often sought by neighbors. An upright man in every respect he took pride in his family. He was sorely stricken by the loss of his two sons and his wife.
The funeral was held at the late home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Stanley R. Evans of the Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial was in Warwick Cemetery."

"Warwick Valley Dispatch; January 9, 1929 Stephen Mars.... Mr Stephen Mars died at eight o'clock Monday morning, January 7th at his home on Main St. in the village of Florida. Mr Mars was born July 15th 1842 in Germany and came to America in 1865. His wife, who died three years ago was Anna L. De Graw of Bellvale. He is survived by three children, Stephen H. of Washingtonville, NY, Dr Jesse D Mars of Florida and Mary wife of Joseph Jacoby of Newburyport, Mass. Two sons Andrew and John died three and ten years ago respectively. Mr Mars was a charter member of Highland Engine and Hose Company No 3 of Florida and for fifty years was a member of Waywayanda Lodge No 34 I O O F Warwick. Mr Mars was a prosperous black dirt farmer from which he retired a number of years ago. The funeral service will be held this afternoon at two o'clock at his late home. The burial will be in the Warwick Cemetery. Rev Stanley R Evans officiating."
