Concerning random sampling of servers (Random ON) within the filtered address space
(Filter ON), general results are:
(1) more than 1% of possible addresses have port 80 listening and accepting connections;
(2) about half of those do offer content when the "default" page is requested (GET / HTTP/1.1);
(3) about half of the servers delivering content have non-zero Pig Scores; and
(4) of these, the average Pig Score is about 10.
By any account, this is a huge phenomenon. For researchers and writers, WebHogs
provides several spread-sheet-ready log files where about two dozen variables are
defined which can be tabulated for descriptive statistics or cross-tabulated to explore
the relationships among variables. No need to speculate. Webhogs provides hard data.
Students can use this tool to get A+ in research papers in school and college, and
professionals likewise, to publish based on facts in journals and news media.
