Jaisalmer, Rajasthan
|
As we entered the fort, we realised that it was larger than what it seemed from the outside. The fort houses a complete miniature city. |
The entrance to the Jaisalmer fort is a huge arched gate with watch keeping windows on the top. Although there have been a lot of shops that have sprung around it, the sheer mass of the fort is felt as you step inside the arch walking over the stone pavement. | As you enter the gate you come to a small crossroad where you can find numerous guides to give you a tour of the fort as well as auto-rickshaws to shuttle you back to your hotel. In the days of the king this area served the venue of any public announcements. |
The fort shelters numerous temples built by the maharaja's and have been maintained by the Rajasthan state government. The above picture is that of a Jain temple located two blocks inside the main entrance. We were amazed on seeing the carvings on the entrance. The entire temple is made of stone. The minute carvings on the entrance are actually small pieces hinged together in the form of a ball and socket arrangement. The craftsmanship is simply amazing. | The temple consists of long hallways with pillars on either side. One such hallway is seen above. From left: Satyen, Mihir |
