Comparison of
Sonar models...
After recieving the Sonar Model 65 Marine radiotelephone (on the left),
I thought it might be a "sister" design for the ferrite antenna Sonar
DF-6X. The panel is silkscreened the same colors and style, the knobs
are the same, and the panel is set back. But the color is a bit
different, the RDF having more of a lighter, greyer look. They do use
the same meter casting, though.
When the Radiotelephone is compared to the earlier loop
Sonar RDF, the colors are closer, the speaker grill has the same red
plastic logo. But the panel color is different. The units share tube
circuitry, while the later DF-6X has an early transistor circuit. But
that may not be a clue to their being contemporary... sometimes the
technical aspects of any radio would advance in fits and starts...
especially in a smaller company like Sonar.
I'll need a Sonar catalog or advertisement with two of the models side
by side, to know which two "go together" for sure. But I think it is
the former pair.
Update: Well
what do you know?! I finally found an ad, and the question is
answered... but not at all the way I expected. Both RDF's sold at the
same time, and both are therefore "sister" units to the Model
65 Marine radiotelephone! Another interesting thing is the design of
the two depth finders, which seems to be similar to the later DF-7X
RDF's, and 150 and 175 tranceivers.
