University of Sydney Faculty of Science Eureka Prize for Biological Sciences

First prize, $5 000 to David Llewellyn of Great Lakes College, Tuncurry NSW
for finding that introduced weeds on the banks of rivers and ponds in New South Wales have a detrimental effect on the waterbugs that live in the stream.

Remaining prize moneys of $6 000 shared between :

Jessica Walsh, a Year 12 student from Pimlico State High School
for her survey of Townsville hermit crabs

Joanne Mackson, a Year 12 student from Kingaroy State High School
for  the effect of salinity on the growth rate of two common crops in the Kingaroy district - sorghum and navy beans

Andrew Stewart, a Year 11 student from Karabar Distance Education Centre in Queanbeyan, NSW
for a more efficient artificial wetland system to combat eutrophication. His project focussed on the ability of a native drought tolerant grass, Carex Appressa, to take up ammonium and nitrate.

Macquarie University Eureka Schools Prize for Earth, Environmental & Planetary Sciences

First prize to Anna Zipf, a Year 12 student at Keebra Park State High School in Queensland
for finding a natural herbicide, produced in native Tallow-wood trees

Second prize to Tiffany Klippel-Cooperand (Year 12) and James Klippel-Cooper (Year 11), of Glenunga International High School, SA
for "Shellfish extract calcium carbonate from seawater to make their shells. Could we do the same using sunlight to power the production of sea-crete to make and protect seaside structures?"

for research into the efficiency, power, torque and rpm output of a scaled down model Stirling engine

First prize of $4 000 to a group of Year 12 students from Murwillumbah High School in NSW
for a proposed 'SafeT' car that would use new technology to monitor and respond to the environment making the road trip safer

Second prize to Catherine Mah, Year 9, Lynwood Senior High School, Perth
for a four-point plan to address Australia's salinity problem that is threatening native flora, fauna, waterways and infrastructure

Third prize to Year 11 students Vicki Xie, Christine Cheung, Mark Wong, Amy Kong and James You of Baulkham Hills High School
for electrically coded cards toaddress compulsive gambling problems

Fourth prize to Adam Kiolle, Jon Clair, Beth Thompson and Jonathan Sri, Year 11s at Queensland's Craigslea State High School
"Instead of invading countries whose choice of headdress we don't approve, who have economies rivalling the West's, or by twist of fate have more oil, we can simply challenge them to a game of lawn bowls."
