Christ: God's Anointed One
The English words "Christ" and "Messiah" are not translated words; they are anglicized words. The word "Christ" is an anglicized form of the Greek word "Christos." Likewise, the English word "Messiah" is an anglicized form of the Hebrew word "Mashiach." All of these words mean exactly the same thing: Anointed One. Unfortunately, translators sometimes anglicized "Christos" in our Bibles and sometimes translated it. Whenever this Greek word refers to Jesus, they anglicized it but whenever it referred to someone else they translated it and thereby obscured the connection between the two for English speaking readers. For example, King Cyrus of Persia is called God's Mashiach (Isaiah 45:1) which in Greek is God's Christos and in English God's Messiah or God's Christ or God's Anointed One (all the terms mean exactly the same thing). However, this verse is usually translated as "God's Anointed" since Trinitarian translators, and Trinitarians themselves, do not like the sound of calling anyone else but Jesus "God's Christ." But the Scriptures do.
Saul, David, Solomon: God's Christ/Messiah/Anointed One
In the Bible, the Kings of Israel were God's Christ, His Anointed One. Saul, David, and Solomon were God's Messiah. The word in question in all of the following passages is the Hebrew word "Mashiach" (Messiah) and in the Greek translation, the word "Christos" (Christ).
God's Anointed One
Verse | Mashiach = Messiah = Christos = Christ = Anointed One |
1 Samuel 2:10
|
And He will give strength to His King, and will exalt the horn of His Messiah/Christ.
|
1 Samuel 12:3,5 King Saul
See 1 Samuel 8:1ff. where Israel rejects God as their King and asked for a human King.
|
Samuel said to all Israel, "Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me and I have appointed a King over you. Now, here is the King walking before you... Here I am; testify against me before the LORD and His Messiah/Christ... The LORD is a witness against you, and His Messiah/Christ is witness this day that you have found nothing in my hand....When you saw that Nahash the King of the sons of Ammon came against you, you said to me, "No, but a King shall reign over us," although the LORD your God was your King. Now therefore, here is the King whom you have chosen, whom you have asked for, and behold, the LORD has set a King over you.
|
1 Samuel 24:6,10 King Saul
|
Far be it from me because of the Lord that I should do this thing to my Lord [Saul], the LORD's Messiah/Christ, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh's Messiah/Christ....I will not stretch out my hand against my Lord [Saul], for he is the LORD's Messiah/Christ.
|
1 Samuel 26:9,11,16,23 King Saul
|
David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’s Messiah/Christ and be without guilt?.... The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’s Messiah/Christ.... As the LORD lives, all of you must surely die, because you did not guard your Lord [Saul], the LORD’s Messiah/Christ.... I refused to stretch out my hand against the LORD’s Messiah/Christ.... Then Saul said to David, "Blessed are you, my son David."
|
2 Samuel 1:14,16 King Saul
|
David said to him, "How is it you were not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD’s Messiah/Christ?... Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the LORD’s Messiah/Christ."
|
2 Samuel 19:21 King David

Although it is not explicitly stated in Scripture, it is reasonably certain that Solomon was also God's Christ. This is implied by the fact that he sat on the throne of Yahweh (1 Chronicles 29:23) over the Kingdom of God (1 Chronicles 28:5). God's Anointed was conditionally expected to obey the Law. Beginning with Solomon's worship of foreign gods, the Kingdom is fallen. See Acts 1:6-7.
David was God's Christ, the man who sat on the throne of Yahweh. God promised David that his seed would sit upon this throne. Jesus was the fulfillment of God's promise to David. Like David, he was God's Christ, His Anointed One. It is important to see that Jesus was not just the Christ; he was God's Christ, His Anointed. The man Jesus is someone who God anointed to carry out His purposes. The following illustrates how various passages would appear in the Scriptures depending how the Greek word is rendered: (1) Christ, (2) Messiah, (3) Anointed One. As already explained, the words "Christ" and "Messiah" are not technically translations but anglicizations. A true translation uses the English term "Anointed One."
God's "Christ"
And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, "Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word for mine eyes have seen Your salvation. (Luke 2:26-30).
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." (Luke 4:18-20).
And He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered and said, "The Christ of God (Or 'God's Christ')." (Luke 9:29).
And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is God's Christ, His Chosen One. (Luke 23:35).
Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him, this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. (Acts 2:36).
But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you. (Acts 3:18-20).
The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against YAHWEH and against His Messiah. For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. (Acts 4:26).
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. (Acts 10:38).

Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ and He will reign forever and ever." (Revelation 11:15.
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. (Revelation 12:10).
God's "Messiah"
And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, "Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word for mine eyes have seen Your salvation.
