TIDEWATER'S OOZE
Jan 2003, Vol. 23, #1
TIDEWATER’S OOZE is the regular monthly publication of the TIDEWATER GROTTO of the NATIONAL SPELEOLOGICAL SOCIETY. If you have any words of wit, trip reports or any insignificant drool, e-mail it to the Editor or mail it all to the TIDEWATER GROTTO, P.O. Box 62642, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23466, and perpetuate your illiteracy!

Go straight to the meeting directions!
Our grotto serves a very wide spread area and in an effort to accommodate everyone (if not on a regular basis, at least on a rotating one) we are searching for a centralized location to conduct our meetings. If you have any suggestions please contact Joedy Klimas via phone (421-2613) or e-mail joedyklimas@cox.net. Please provide any contact information you may have including address and phone number of the suggested site.
At the suggestion of Al Stubbe, a change in meeting agendas was made. I thought the schedule suggestion listed below was good planning so I changed our internet web page to reflect this information.
"Meeting Agendas
January: Nominations for Officers.
Upon reading our By-Laws, however, I see that we are presently locked into holding the annual election of officers in March:
"V. Meetings of the membership shall be held at least ten times a year. The annual meeting for the election of officers is to be held in March. The Executive Committee will determine the time, place and date for such meetings. A special meeting may be called by the Chairman upon request of at least five members."
I propose we change the By-Laws at the January meeting. I would like Section V of the By-Laws to read:
"V. Meetings of the membership shall be held at least ten times a year. Nominations for Officers will take place in January. The annual meeting for the election of officers is to be held in February. At the March meeting, new Officers begin their term. April 1st, membership dues will be made payable to "Tidewater Grotto" and collected by the Treasurer. The Executive Committee will determine the time, place and date for such meetings. A special meeting may be called by the Chairman upon request of at least five members."
Please be ready to discuss this change to the By-Laws at the January meeting. Comments may be e-mailed to me at joedyklimas@cox.net.

Grotto T-shirt Update
Our t-shirts depicting an outline of the state of Virginia with a bat 'flying' out of the Tidewater area have been printed at All Star Graphics in Richmond. For those members who ordered shirts, come to the January meeting and get your shirts.
There are a number of items such as windbreakers, sweatshirts, pants, etc. which we can purchase. A catalogue will be available for viewing at the January meeting.
If you would like to place an order, contact Vickie Paul via e-mail at vicinpgh@yahoo.com or call 621-1435.
Tidewater Grotto Recent Activities
Although we had several trips scheduled in December 2002, the holidays and snow canceled all of them.
For the future, our Grotto has a cabin reserved at Thorn Spring Park in Franklin, WV on the holidays Martin Luther King Day (Jan 18-20), Presidents Day (Feb 15-17), and St. Patrick's Day (Mar 15-17). The size of the cabin has been left open. Anyone wishing to put together a caving trip and use one of these reservations, please call Rita Klimas and she will confirm the reservations for you. Sometimes these cabins are very hard to get on the holidays due to the heavy caving activity in the Franklin area. For those who want to go with the group but not cave, the trout should be jumping in Smoke Hole Canyon just north of Franklin, so, bring your fly rod and get a West Virginia fishing license!

We didn't get to go caving in December but that doesn't mean that we forgot about caving altogether. Here is Tim Parker practicing the Frog system of climbing and then rappelling back down in Joedy's and Rita's front yard. Practicing is essential when trying out new equipment. There's always something to adjust, discard, or a new technique to learn. Good job Tim!
