My Journal

September 15, 1863
Dear Diary,
I have been invited to attend a tea next Saturday. Mother gave me permission to attend as long as I make one of my pies for the tea. Everyone enjoys the pies and I feel appreciated when they are requested for an event. I was also asked to bring along my violin, so that I may play for the guests. I am very excited, since this is my first tea that I have been invited to personally. With the war, there has been little time for entertainment for any of us.
I'll write more later.
Your friend,
Margaret

Dear Diary,
I had a wonderful time at the tea today. I played my violin for the ladies and they trully thought that I did a wonderful job. I shared in the conversation and learned some new ideas for cooking from the ladies. I found some other girls my age, who showed me some new dances. Hopefully, I'll have the opportunity to try them out sometime soon.
Well, I must go help Mother with dinner, so until then, I'll always be
Your friend,
Margaret
