To the Fair
“You have
got to be kidding me!” Ezra shouted.
The twinkle
in Vin’s eyes betrayed his amusement at Standish’s
reaction. “What’s the matter Ezra? Not what you had in mind?”
“Mr.
Tanner, Do I look like a fool to you? Of
course this is not what I had in mind!
You said a fair contest. Not
this.”
“Yeah, I
said a contest and you volunteered, so you help the girls and I’ll help the
boys.” Vin said as he turned to help the boys that were
standing to the side watching them argue, trying not to laugh. He had never seen Ezra so flustered.
“Mr.
Tanner, I absolutely refuse! There is no
way that I can proceed with this,” Ezra stated
emphatically.
“Why, Ez,
what for? It’s just a cat show. All you have to do is help the kids brush
their cats and make sure they go in the right order. Ain’t no big
deal.” Vin
cajoled. He couldn’t believe all the
fuss Ezra was making. Sure he had left
out a few of the details, but what was the big deal?
“But…” Ezra
trailed off, before gathering his courage and blurting out. “I’m allergic to cats!!”
Vin
stared at his friend for a moment before bursting out laughing. Ezra watched as Vin
tried to contain his hilarity and failed miserably. Finally giving up, Ezra stormed over to where
the girls stood giggling.
For the
next two hours, Ezra sneezed and sniffled.
The cat show went off easily as far as the children were concerned. He organized them so that while one set was
showing their animals he could be in the back getting the next set ready. By the time he was done, he conceded that he
had had a good time, even if his nose was a red a Rudolph’s. He was going to have to figure out a way to
get back at Vin for his little over site. “Nothing, just need
some help for the children.” Yes, this
definitely called for retribution.
