Objectives:

- SC.H.3.3.1: Uses appropriate procedures for safety in the classroom, home, and community.

Topic of Study: Safety and School Procedures
Activities:
- Establish basic class and homework procedure. Ex. Homework, Missed assignments, Class Rules.
- You will participate in a Rotation Lab. Your job is to complete the work assigned at the 9 lab stations.
- You will review important safety rules and sign the agreement.
Evaluation: Candle homework
Homework:
- Read both sides of the “Personal Responsibility Agreement” handout and sign your name.
- Following all directions for safety, you are to complete the candle activity. Before you begin the homework, have your parent sign the supervision agreement and the safety pledge.
- Attach the used candle to your worksheet while at home. Do not return the envelope. This assignment is due next class.

Session #3: August 24/27
Objective:
- SC.H.3.3.1: Uses appropriate procedures for safety in the classroom, home, and community.
- SC.H.3.3.2: Knows that special care must be taken in using animals in scientific research.
- SC.H.3.3.3: Knows that in research involving human subjects, the ethics of science require that potential subjects be fully informed about the risks and benefits associated with the research and of their right to refuse to participate.

- Read “The Nature of Science and Technology,” from the Reading Essentials Workbook pages 1-6. Answer questions 2-7 throughout the reading, and questions 1-2 on pg. 6.

Session #6: September 3/4
Objectives:
- SC.H.1.3.7: Knows that when similar investigations give different results, the scientific challenge is to verify whether the differences are significantly by further study.

Homework:
- 1. Prepare “flashcards” for the following vocabulary words and study vocabulary for quiz.
- Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space and whose particles are in constant motion.
- Volume: A measure of the amount of space an object takes up.
- Mass: Amount of matter an object contains.
- Density: the concentration of matter in an object; the mass per unit volume of a substance in a given area (d=m/v)
- Experiment: A procedure that is carried out and repeated under controlled conditions in order to test a hypothesis; includes all components of the scientific method.
- Investigation: A procedure that is carried out in order to observe a response caused by stimulus not a complete experiment.
- Temperature: Measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in any object, the greater the average kinetic energy, the higher an object’s temperature.
- Length: The distance between two given points.
Session # 7: September 5/6
