Point Guard
Florida Gators
Junior
Birthdate: October 22, 1980
St. Albans High School, WV
Strengths: Possibly the best ball handler in college basketball. Nelson has amazing range and is deadly from the 3 point line. One of the best 3 point shooters in all of college basketball. He is deadly off the dribble or spotting up. An entertainer, Nelson plays up tempo basketball and is very good at getting his teammates involved. Fancy passes and dribbling skills give him comparisons to the NBA's Jason Williams but Nelson is much more under control than him. Getting better at limiting turnovers and his shot selection is pretty good. Tall point guard who has good quickness. Exceptional speed with or without the ball. Plays with a high energy level and always hustles on the court. Makes a lot of steals because he is a very active defender and is great at pushing the ball down the court following a steal.

Weaknesses: Needs to add a lot of strength before he is ready for the NBA. Isn't a physical player and will have a difficult time against bigger guards in the NBA. Not an outstanding on the ball defender but isn't horrible. Still needs to improve some on playing under control and limiting the turnovers. Won't be a dominating offensive player in the NBA, so he is going to be more of a "true" point guard. Not a horrible athlete but isn't in the elite class of NBA PG's in terms of athleticism. Has a tendency to pick up dumb fouls on the perimeter going for steals. Plays a lot of wing guard in college so he will have to adjust to scoring from in the point in the NBA.

Outlook: Behind the flash Nelson is a terrific point guard. He may not be as athletic as the NBA's Jason Williams but he is taller and a better shooter. Has a good NBA future with his play making skills and outside shot. Likely a mid-first round pick in 2002 but a lot of his draft status will be determined by underclassmen point guards declaring early for the draft. If he stays for his senior year at Florida he could go as high as the late lottery.
